2024 BMW X3M Competition: An Owner’s Initial Review and Driving Impressions

After much anticipation and deliberation, I finally took ownership of a brand new 2024 Bmw X3m Competition. My journey to this point was somewhat circuitous, initially setting my sights on the elusive M3 xDrive wagon, a model unfortunately not available in the USA. Subsequently, I considered the M3 xDrive sedan, even placing an order and deposit, only to discover the order was never processed due to salesperson transitions at the dealership.

This hiccup prompted a reassessment of my daily driving needs, which crystallized into the following key requirements:

  • Engaging and exhilarating driving dynamics, offering a significant step up from ordinary vehicles with ample power.
  • Practicality and space to accommodate family needs, including camping gear, bicycles, and road trip essentials.
  • A comfortable, luxurious, and technologically advanced cabin environment.

While the M3 could address some of these points, the X3M Competition emerged as the more pragmatic choice, particularly for cargo capacity. Moreover, learning that the X3M Competition shares the same potent drivetrain as the M3 xDrive piqued my interest, leading me to immerse myself in reviews. The consensus was largely positive, with the ride stiffness being a recurring point of discussion.

Having owned several performance-oriented BMWs and MINIs in the past, including an E90 M3, R56 Mini Cooper S, and a BMW M Coupe, I am no stranger to firm suspensions. My previous vehicle, a 2020 MINI Clubman JCW, also featured a rather unforgiving suspension setup. Regrettably, a test drive of the X3M Competition wasn’t feasible before placing my order.

My local BMW dealership informed me that 2024 model year X3M configurable builds were no longer being allocated due to the impending 2025 X3 generation. However, through their network (part of AutoNation), they located a vehicle in the build queue. Fortuitously, an enthusiast sales representative managed to redirect this locked build to my local dealership without requiring an upfront deposit, which I greatly appreciated.

Ultimately, I finalized the purchase through financing and opted for the BMW extended warranty and prepaid service, intending to keep this vehicle long-term.

Configuration of my 2024 BMW X3M Competition:

  • Exterior Color: Brooklyn Grey
  • Competition Package
  • 21” V-Spoke 765M wheels
  • Driving Assistance Professional Package
  • Executive Package (without Glass roof)
  • Remote Engine Start
  • M Shadowline Lights
  • Front Ventilated Seats
  • Wireless Charging
  • Black Brake Calipers
  • Space Saver Spare Tire

This configuration is nearly ideal for my preferences, although a custom blue exterior shade would have been a welcome option, and I slightly prefer the 892M Competition wheels aesthetically.

Initial Driving Experiences with the 2024 BMW X3M Competition:

Currently, I am diligently adhering to the break-in period guidelines. However, I did seize the opportunity to drive the X3M Competition on my favorite back road. It’s worth noting that this is the largest vehicle I have ever owned. I am genuinely astonished by the composure and velocity of this approximately 4600 lb SUV.

  • Cabin Quietness: The interior is remarkably quiet, with minimal road noise intrusion.
  • Handling Prowess: The handling is exceptionally sharp and controlled, conveying a sense of being firmly planted.
  • Steering Feel: While the steering offers a degree of insulation, the chassis provides clear communication regarding grip levels as you approach the limit.
  • Braking Performance: The brakes are incredibly powerful and confidence-inspiring.
  • Acceleration: Even while being mindful of the break-in constraints, the vehicle feels exceptionally fast.
  • Synthesized Engine Noise: The artificial engine sound is less intrusive than anticipated and is likely to remain enabled.
  • Ride Comfort: The ride quality is firm yet not excessively harsh. Comfort mode is perfectly suitable for everyday driving, and even Sport/Sport Plus modes are not jarring in my opinion.

Overall, I am exceedingly pleased with my purchase of the 2024 BMW X3M Competition. It effectively serves as a rapid and luxurious daily driver, delivering exhilarating performance when desired, coupled with impressive handling and a wealth of comfort and convenience features. The spaciousness for passengers and cargo further solidifies its position as an exceptional all-around vehicle for my needs.

Community Engagement and Questions:

For fellow 2024 X3M Competition owners, I am curious about the factory tire selection on your vehicles. Mine came equipped with Hankook Ventus S1 evo Z tires, which have provided satisfactory grip during initial spirited driving. Nevertheless, I am considering switching to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires when replacement becomes necessary.

Furthermore, I would appreciate any recommended equalizer settings for the audio system, particularly for electronic music genres with a preference for enhanced bass response. The default audio profile seems somewhat flat and emphasizes mid-range and treble frequencies. While I intend to experiment with adjustments, I suspect other owners may have already refined optimal EQ configurations.

Planned Modifications for the 2024 BMW X3M Competition:

My intended modifications are relatively subtle and geared towards practicality: the installation of a hidden trailer hitch and a low-profile roof rack, likely the black Thule cross bars.
