Is Your Chevy OBD2 Compliant? Understanding Chevy OBD2 Scanners

Hey fellow Chevy enthusiasts! Ever wondered about keeping tabs on your Chevy’s health? OBD2 scanners are the key, offering a peek under the hood without even getting your hands greasy. I recently picked up an OBD2 scan tool myself and decided to put my ’95 Chevy Jimmy through its paces. The relief was real when the full scan came back clean – especially considering the work I’ve put into getting her back in shape!

For those of us with ’95 models, there’s often a question mark hanging over OBD2 compliance. I can confirm, my ’95 Jimmy is indeed OBD2. It wasn’t just the scanner connecting flawlessly; the vehicle manual offered supporting information too. There’s also a handy sticker in the engine compartment, usually on top of the radiator shroud, detailing emissions information. This sticker should clearly state “OBD2 compliant” if your vehicle is equipped.

Now, I know the ’95 model year can be a bit of a gray area. Some manufacturers were in a transition phase, leading to what’s sometimes called OBD1.5 – a sort of hybrid system. I even experienced this myself with a ’95 Grand Am back in the day. But for my ’95 Jimmy, it’s definitely a full OBD2 system.

Unfortunately, I can’t show you the original sticker from my truck. During a front-end collision before I owned it, the radiator shroud was among the casualties. The replacement shroud I sourced was also from a ’95, but seemingly not an OBD2 compliant model, so the sticker was different. Just having the OBD2 connector isn’t a guarantee either, as some OBD1.5 systems also used the same connector, with the computer located in the dash. Therefore, to be absolutely certain about OBD2 compliance on your ’95 Chevy, the emissions sticker on the upper radiator shroud is your definitive guide. Look for “OBD2 compliant” in the upper right corner of that sticker, and you’ll know for sure.
