1987 Buick GNX: The Grand National Experimental and Turbocharged Pinnacle

The Buick Regal T-Type and Grand National represented a unique breed of automobiles, quickly recognized as future classics even when freshly introduced to the market. By 1987, Buick had refined its turbocharged 231 cubic inch V6 engine to produce over 245 horsepower, a stark contrast to the era where a contemporary Chevrolet Camaro with a 305 CI V8 and automatic transmission managed a mere 190 horsepower. At the zenith of this performance lineage stood the 1987 Buick Grand National Experimental, or GNX, a limited-edition marvel. This model was not just an upgrade; it was the definitive culmination of the turbo Buick legacy, embodying all the elements that made these cars exceptional.

Only 547 Buick Grand Nationals were specifically produced with unique interior features and then shipped to American Specialty Cars (ASC) McLaren Performance Technologies for the comprehensive GNX transformation. This conversion involved significant enhancements, including a Garrett T3 turbocharger equipped with a ceramic impeller and a distinctive GNX heat shield, a larger, more efficient intercooler, and a recalibrated engine management system. Performance-tuned suspension featuring a torque bar and an exclusive GNX rear differential cover were also integral to the upgrade package. The 3.8L V6 engine within the GNX was conservatively rated at 276 horsepower at 4,400 RPM and a robust 360 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 RPM. This power was channeled through a meticulously prepared Turbo-HydraMatic 2004R transmission, ensuring optimal performance and durability.

The result of these upgrades was breathtaking performance. The GNX could accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in under five seconds and achieve quarter-mile times in the low 13-second range, figures that were remarkable for production cars of that era. Aesthetically, the GNX distinguished itself with vented front fenders, deliberate removal of hood and fender emblems for a cleaner look, and unique 16-inch aluminum mesh wheels finished in black with GNX-branded center caps, shod with high-performance Goodyear Eagle Gatorback tires. Each of these 547 “Fourtunate Few” GNXs represents a piece of automotive history, with some, like the featured unrestored example number 155 boasting an incredibly low mileage of just 12 miles, as displayed on its special instrumentation package. Completing the package were GNX-badged front carpet savers, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and the original ASC McLaren GNX window sticker, detailing all the exclusive features that cemented this turbo Buick’s status as a Grand National Experimental legend.
