The 2008 Corvette Z06 is a machine built for performance. A regular customer and BMW aficionado brought in his Z06, a recent addition to his collection alongside his M3s. While his BMWs handle daily driving duties, this Corvette Z06 was destined for more spirited activities – autocross events. With only 1400 miles on the odometer, this Z06 was barely broken in, but already prepped for action with significant suspension work, lowering its stance dramatically, and a substantial clear bra to protect against track debris.
The owner’s intention was clear: enjoy the car to its fullest potential, not let it sit idle. He even offered a ride-along during an autocross event, an invitation eagerly anticipated after seeing the car’s aggressive setup. Before hitting the track, however, the Z06 was in need of a thorough detailing to remove the remnants of dealership prep and prepare it for both show and go.

Interior Revival: Cleaning and Protecting the Z06 Cabin
Stepping inside the 2008 Corvette Z06, it was evident the interior had been overlooked during the initial dealership delivery. A noticeable layer of dust coated every surface, requiring a comprehensive cleaning.
Alt text: Before detailing, the 2008 Corvette Z06 interior shows a layer of dust accumulation on the dashboard and console.
The detailing process began with a meticulous wipe-down of the console and instrument panel. For the remaining interior surfaces, a protective layer of Optimum Protectant Plus was applied. This product was chosen specifically because the owner prefers a natural, non-shiny finish. Optimum Protectant Plus delivers UV protection while maintaining a factory-fresh appearance, avoiding an overly “dressed” look. Application was done by spraying the protectant onto a microfiber towel and then gently wiping each surface.

For the Z06’s leather upholstery, the goal was to condition and protect the new material without adding unwanted shine or greasy residue. Leatherique Prestine Clean was selected for this task. While commonly known as the cleaning step in the Leatherique system, Prestine Clean also contains conditioners, making it an excellent all-in-one solution for leather, vinyl, and even rubber components like door and window seals.
The application of Leatherique Prestine Clean started by spraying the product directly onto the leather seats.

Next, the product was thoroughly worked into the leather surfaces by hand, ensuring deep penetration and even coverage.

After allowing the Prestine Clean to dwell for approximately 15 minutes, the seats were wiped down with a damp microfiber towel, leaving the leather clean, conditioned, and ready for the road.
Window cleaning, especially in a Corvette with its steeply raked windshield, can be challenging. The DI Easy Reach Mini Mop proved to be an indispensable tool. Its long handle and pivoting head made reaching the base of the windshield effortless, ensuring streak-free clarity across the expansive glass.

The result of the interior detailing was a refreshed and clean cabin, prepared for both daily driving and track days.

Exterior Enhancement: Wheels, Exhaust, and Paint Correction on the Z06
Moving to the exterior, the wheels of the 2008 Z06, while of a more open design for easier cleaning compared to previous generations, still exhibited a significant amount of brake dust accumulation, typical of high-performance vehicles.

The exhaust tips also showed signs of buildup, though nothing a quick clean and polish couldn’t resolve.

P21S Wheel Gel and a large E-Z Detail brush were employed to effectively clean the wheels. Tires and wheel wells were addressed using P21S Total Auto Wash, ensuring all aspects of the wheel and tire area were thoroughly cleaned.
The detailing process revealed another perfect application for the new mini E-Z Detail brush: cleaning between the exhaust tips, an often-overlooked area.

The exterior wash commenced with a foam bath using Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Clear at a paint prep ratio. This was intended to strip away any existing waxes or sealants, even though the owner believed the car was unwaxed. It’s common practice for dealerships to apply fillers or glazes before delivery.
Alt text: A 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 completely covered in foam from Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Clear, preparing the paint for clay bar treatment and further detailing.
Following the foam bath and rinse, clay bar treatment was performed using Chemical Guys clay and Dodo Juice Born Slippy as lubricant. The paint surface was surprisingly clean, indicating minimal contamination. However, upon closer inspection after drying, the tell-tale signs of dealership-applied glaze became apparent, masking improper rotary polishing techniques that had left behind hazing and holograms.
Alt text: Close inspection reveals hazing and hologram imperfections in the black paint of the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06, a result of poor dealer preparation.
The hood and other horizontal surfaces were particularly affected, showing clear evidence of swirl marks and imperfections.
Alt text: Severe swirl marks and paint defects visible on the hood of the 2008 Corvette Z06, highlighting the need for paint correction detailing.
Initially, a simple one-step polish was planned, aiming for improvement and protection without striving for perfection, given the car’s intended autocross use. However, the severity of the dealer-induced damage, combined with the notoriously hard clear coat of Corvettes, suggested a more aggressive approach would be necessary.
Surprisingly, a test section using a Makita rotary polisher, a white Lake Country pad, and Menzerna 106FA polish yielded unexpected results. The swirls and holograms appeared to vanish completely. Multiple wipe-downs with isopropyl alcohol confirmed that this was genuine correction, not just filling. Continuing with this combination across the hood and fender consistently delivered defect-free results. Achieving this level of correction on a Corvette clear coat with such a light polish and pad combination is exceptionally rare, indicating unusually soft paint on this particular Z06.
Alt text: Before and after polishing: the left side of the 2008 Corvette Z06 hood corrected and swirl-free, contrasting with the uncorrected, hologram-filled paint on the right.
With just a few minutes of polishing, the hood was transformed.

The softness of the paint was a significant discovery. The theory arose that this late-production 2008 Z06 might have been finished with the softer paint intended for the upcoming 2009 ZR1 model, known for its softer clear coat.
This fortunate discovery meant the detailing process would be less time-consuming than anticipated. The 106/white pad combination was effectively used across the entire car.

Deeper defects were found near the fuel filler door, which might typically require more aggressive methods like wet sanding on a standard Corvette.
Alt text: Visible scratches and paint damage near the fuel filler door of the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 requiring localized paint correction.
However, even these more severe scratches showed significant improvement after just one pass with the 106/white pad combination, further demonstrating the paint’s soft nature.

While not fully corrected with the initial light polish, a subsequent pass with Menzerna Super Intensive Polish and an orange Lake Country pad completely eliminated the deeper defects. Smaller, tighter areas were addressed using a 4″ white polishing pad.

To maximize gloss, a final polishing stage was performed using Menzerna PO85RD with a red Lake Country pad. This finishing polish further enhanced the depth and wetness of the black paint.

Final Touches and Stunning Results for the 2008 Corvette Z06
