As a long-term owner of a 2016 Bmw X5 Edrive, I’ve put about 30,300 miles (48,000 km) on the clock of this ex-showroom model, and I’m ready to share my experiences. Coming from Finland, my perspective includes navigating harsh winters and taking full advantage of the hybrid technology in everyday driving. One of the most compelling aspects of the 2016 BMW X5 eDrive is its hybrid system. The instant torque provided by the electric motor, combined with the internal combustion engine (ICE), delivers a driving experience that rivals, and in some ways surpasses, traditional gasoline or diesel models like the 35i or 30d. In fact, the only engines that might tempt me away from the eDrive’s hybrid power are the significantly more powerful M50d or 50i, neither of which were readily available in my market at the time of purchase.
Even in extreme cold, down to -22°F (-30°C), the 2016 BMW X5 eDrive has performed reliably. While the electric range understandably diminishes in such temperatures, the hybrid system itself continues to function without issue. Over all my trips, the average fuel consumption has been around 36.19 U.S. MPG (6.5 liters per 100km). To maintain accurate records, I use the IFFFT app to log every drive and refueling stop, ensuring precise data on real-world efficiency. Charging convenience is also a significant advantage. With a type two (230V/16A) charger at home and charging facilities available at my office (a 10-mile commute each way), keeping the battery topped up is straightforward and integrates seamlessly into my daily routine.
However, my ownership experience hasn’t been without its challenges. Several warranty repairs were necessary in the initial years. These included issues with the braking system, specifically a front right caliper replacement and work on the main caliper. Additionally, I encountered problems with the rear hubs, manifesting as vibrations. Initially, the dealership was skeptical, and the factory-fitted Nokian tires were also suspected as contributing to the issue. Resolving the rear hub problem required multiple visits to the service center before a solution was found and implemented. An initial rattle from the dashboard displays was also addressed and resolved in a single service appointment.
Despite these warranty-related repairs, it’s crucial to note that I have experienced no issues whatsoever with the hybrid powertrain itself. This positive experience has solidified my preference for hybrid technology, and I am now looking forward to ordering the newer 45e model. Before committing to the 2016 BMW X5 eDrive, and again when considering an upgrade, I test drove competitors, including the Audi Q8. While the Q8 is undoubtedly a luxurious vehicle, I found its engine and transmission performance to be underwhelming. The responsiveness felt delayed and hesitant, particularly when accelerating – a noticeable contrast to the immediate power delivery of the eDrive’s hybrid system. The new BMW G05 X5 was also considered and is a very appealing vehicle in its own right. However, my preference for hybrid technology, driven by both performance and efficiency considerations, ultimately led me back to the BMW hybrid lineup. Furthermore, in my location, taxation policies heavily favor hybrid vehicles, making the 2016 BMW X5 eDrive and its successors a financially sound choice as well.
These are my experiences and insights from driving the 2016 BMW X5 eDrive in Finland.
