2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e Owner Review: Hybrid Performance and Real-World Reliability

Having clocked approximately 48,000 kilometers (around 30,300 miles) in my 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e, an ex-showroom model, I’m ready to share my experiences. The hybrid system has consistently impressed me, delivering instant torque that rivals even the traditional 35i or 30d models, especially when combined with the internal combustion engine (ICE). Frankly, the only upgrade I’d consider in terms of power would be the M50d or the 50i, neither of which are available in my market. The 2016 xDrive40e’s hybrid functionality remains robust even in extreme cold, managing to operate effectively down to -30 degrees Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit), though naturally, the electric-only range becomes negligible in such conditions.

Fuel efficiency has been a notable advantage. My average fuel consumption across all types of journeys sits around 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers, which translates to an impressive 36.19 U.S. MPG. To maintain accuracy in tracking, I utilize the IFFFT app to meticulously log every drive and refueling stop. Charging convenience is well-addressed with a type two (230V/16A) charger at home, and I also have access to charging facilities at my workplace, which is particularly useful given my 16-kilometer (10-mile) commute.

However, my ownership hasn’t been without its share of warranty-related repairs. The brake system required attention, including the replacement of the front right caliper and the main caliper itself. Issues also arose with the rear hubs, manifesting as car vibrations that were initially dismissed by the dealership. This problem was compounded by the original Nokian tires, and resolving it necessitated multiple visits to finally get them replaced. An initial rattle emanating from the displays was thankfully rectified in a single service appointment.

Despite these warranty interventions, the hybrid powertrain itself has been faultless. Looking ahead, I am planning to place an order for the newer 45e model. In comparison, I test drove the Audi Q8, and while it’s undeniably a luxurious vehicle, I found its engine and transmission performance to be underwhelming, particularly the noticeable lag in responsiveness. The latest BMW G05 X5 generation is also appealing, but my preference remains with the hybrid technology. It’s also worth noting that the significantly higher vehicle taxation in my location heavily influences my inclination towards hybrid vehicles.

These are my personal insights from Finland, offering a user’s perspective on the 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e.
