Having clocked around 30,300 miles (48,000 km) in my 2016 Bmw X5 Xdrive40e, which was previously a showroom model, I’m ready to share my ownership experience. The hybrid system has consistently impressed me. The instant torque, especially combined with the internal combustion engine, is more satisfying than what you’d get from a standard 35i or 30d model. The only step up in power I’d consider would be the M50d or 50i, neither of which were available in my market. Even in harsh Finnish winters, down to -22°F (-30°C), the 2016 bmw x5 xdrive40e performs reliably, though predictably, electric range diminishes significantly in such cold.
Fuel economy has been a strong point. Across all types of driving, I’ve averaged about 36.19 U.S. MPG (6.5 liters per 100km). I use the IFFFT app to meticulously track all my journeys and refueling, ensuring accuracy in these figures. Charging convenience is also good; I have a type two (230V/16A) charger at home, and I can also top up at my office, which is about a 10-mile commute each way.
However, my 2016 bmw x5 xdrive40e has required a number of warranty repairs. These included brake work – a front right caliper replacement and work on the main caliper itself. I also experienced issues with the rear hubs, manifesting as vibrations. Initially, the dealership was skeptical, and even the Nokian tires were suspected as part of the problem. Resolving this required multiple visits and tire replacements. An initial rattle from the displays was fixed in a single visit, thankfully.
Despite these warranty issues, the hybrid system itself has been faultless. Looking ahead, I’m planning to order the newer 45e model. As part of my decision process, I test drove an Audi Q8. While it’s a very attractive vehicle, I found the engine and transmission performance disappointing. The responsiveness felt laggy, particularly in lower gears. The new G05 X5 is also appealing, but my preference remains with hybrid technology, especially considering the significant taxation benefits for hybrids in Finland.
These are my experiences from Finland with the 2016 bmw x5 xdrive40e.
