2017 GTI: Reviewing the Iconic Hot Hatch from Volkswagen

Driving the Golf R previously made me curious about the GTI. Many have asked which model I would choose. While I deeply respect the Golf R’s performance and sophistication, my personal preference leans towards the more approachable, front-wheel-drive Golf GTI, especially with its classic plaid seats.

My admiration for the Golf, particularly the GTI, has always been strong. It’s the quintessential hot hatch, appealing to a wide range of tastes. The Volkswagen GTI is not only exhilarating to drive on winding roads but also remarkably versatile, fitting seamlessly into diverse environments, from upscale country clubs to university campuses. Most importantly, the 2017 Gti delivers an undeniably fun driving experience, putting a smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel.

The Enduring Design of the MK7 GTI

The model we’re examining is the seventh-generation Golf, the MK7. Built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, shared with various Audi models, the MK7 Golf is widely regarded as one of the best cars available today. Across its different trims, from the base model to the Sportwagen Alltrack and the high-performance R, the Golf consistently outperforms expectations, often challenging larger, more expensive vehicles.

The 2017 GTI model is particularly striking. Its seventh iteration of the classic two-box design, reminiscent of the original Rabbit from over 40 years ago, features enhanced dimensions—longer, wider, and more robust—while retaining its appealing proportions. It maintains an unassuming yet stylish presence, easily accommodating a mountain bike in the rear or a child seat in the back. In GTI guise, the Golf boasts stylish 18-inch wheels, GTI badging, unique headlights, and a more aggressive front fascia.

The subtle red trim accents further enhance its sporty character, adding a touch of flair.

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI was available in both three-door and five-door configurations. However, 2017 marked the final year for the three-door GTI in Canada, which is unfortunate for enthusiasts of that body style. The test model was the five-door version, offering increased practicality for everyday use and lending the GTI a more mature look, especially in the sophisticated Night Blue Metallic paint.

Optimal Power for a Hot Hatch

Many argue that the Golf R surpasses the GTI due to its higher power output and all-wheel-drive system. However, several factors are more critical when choosing a sports car than just raw power. The GTI’s performance is more nuanced and compelling than its specifications might suggest.

Notably, the GTI shares many mechanical components with the Golf R. It features the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder engine. In the GTI, this engine delivers 210 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, according to Volkswagen. The optional Performance package boosts power by an additional ten horsepower and adds upgraded brakes and a torque-sensing limited-slip differential. The test vehicle was the Autobahn trim, which did not include the Performance package.

Power in the 2017 GTI is delivered to the front wheels via a standard 6-speed manual transmission, or, as in this test vehicle, the exceptional 6-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic, also found in the Golf R. Surprisingly, the automatic transmission is highly suitable for the GTI. It offers quick responses in both manual and automatic modes. While the exhaust notes are less aggressive compared to the R, the overall operation is refined and efficient, significantly enhancing performance. Few cars in this price range can match the precision of this transmission.

Perhaps the Acura ILX is a comparable option in terms of transmission responsiveness.

Similar to the Golf R and other Golf models, the initial impression when driving the 2017 GTI is its solid and composed feel on the road. It is an exceptionally well-built car, and the suspension tuning, although not adjustable like in the R, is expertly calibrated—neither too firm nor too soft. Throughout the test drive, the GTI effectively absorbed road imperfections, maintaining composure without unwanted chassis noises or cabin rattles. The power delivery is equally impressive; while not as intense as the R’s, the 2.0-liter turbo engine is a standout, providing consistent torque across the rev range once past the initial turbo lag.

The GTI feels significantly more powerful than its official figures suggest.

Volkswagen states a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.6 seconds for the DSG-equipped GTI. Like the R, it includes a launch control feature, and in Sport mode, the transmission shifts gears more aggressively, holding revs for longer periods. The electric power steering also firms up, providing a sporty and engaging feel. However, steering feedback is somewhat limited.

Despite the limited steering feedback, the 2017 GTI excels in both straight-line and cornering performance. It remains composed and responsive, effortlessly handling various driving conditions. While there is some understeer, it’s easily managed by slightly lifting off the throttle, allowing the GTI’s well-tuned chassis to regain composure. The handling and braking are exceptional, reflecting meticulous engineering to achieve near-perfect performance.

Interestingly, the chassis and suspension tuning for the GTI were overseen by the same engineer responsible for the Porsche 911 GT3—a testament to the level of expertise applied to the GTI.

The 2017 GTI: An Ideal Daily Driver

The 2017 GTI’s greatest strength lies not just in its spirited performance on back roads, which it delivers admirably, but in its seamless integration into daily life. It remains, fundamentally, a Golf, offering exceptional practicality, smoothness, comfort, and quietness during everyday driving. With the rear seats folded down, the GTI boasts a cargo capacity of 1492 liters.

This cargo space surpasses that of some crossovers.

Stepping inside the 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI reveals one of the most refined interiors in its class, rivaling even luxury sedans. The test model featured the iconic plaid cloth seats, a nod to the original GTI, which are a standout feature. Leather upholstery is also available for those preferring a different aesthetic.

Regardless of the upholstery, the seats are exceptionally comfortable and supportive. The GTI’s instrumentation is straightforward and well-organized, featuring traditional analog gauges and a central LCD screen for additional information like fuel economy and music selection. The interior is functional and uncluttered, yet elegant, thanks to high-quality materials, excellent build quality, and subtle GTI-specific accents like red stitching and ambient red LED lighting.

The flat-bottom steering wheel, both visually appealing and comfortable to hold, integrates most of the car’s infotainment and driving controls. The GTI’s semi-autonomous features are subtly integrated and easily accessible via a stalk-mounted button. These systems operate unobtrusively, with the lane assist being particularly effective.

Praising semi-autonomous technology in a Golf GTI might seem unusual, but it underscores the GTI’s comprehensive capabilities. It excels in nearly every aspect, making a strong case against needing anything more. While the Golf R pushes the performance limits within the Golf range, the 2017 GTI offers a beautifully balanced package, feeling more like a precision instrument than just a car.

The Premium Aspect of the Hot Hatch

Despite its near-perfection, the 2017 GTI has a few minor drawbacks. The simulated Soundaktor engine noise, while less pronounced than in the R, is still somewhat intrusive. It vibrates through the cabin and can sound artificial, especially in cold weather when ice on the windshield can cause odd resonances.

Price is another consideration. While the base three-door manual model is reasonably priced, adding features like extra doors and upgraded wheels quickly increases the cost. Starting around $29,495, the price can rise to $34,845 with these additions. Opting for the full GTI experience with the Performance package can push the price to $38,695. At this level, considering options from Audi becomes relevant, potentially diminishing the GTI’s value proposition.

Given the GTI’s premium feel, it might be beneficial for Volkswagen to reserve the high-end features for the Golf R and maintain a more accessible price point for the GTI. The core appeal of the GTI has always been affordable performance for a wider audience, and at the higher price points, this value is somewhat diluted. Additionally, Volkswagen’s maintenance costs are generally higher than average.

The recommendation is to consider the base GTI trim levels. They offer the same exhilarating, refined, and practical hatchback experience as the higher trims but at a more budget-friendly price. Pricing aside, the 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI is an exceptional vehicle in every sense, satisfying both driving enthusiasts and those needing a practical, understated family car.

Ultimately, these combined qualities of performance and practicality make the 2017 GTI a worthwhile investment.
