2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid: Redefining Performance and Efficiency

The 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid emerges as a groundbreaking model, seamlessly merging the potent four-litre V8 engine, emblematic of the Panamera Turbo lineage, with an advanced electric motor. This innovative combination culminates in a staggering system power output of 500 kW/680 hp, achieving an exceptional balance between raw power and environmental consciousness. Boasting 850 Nm of torque readily available just above idle speed, this all-wheel-drive Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid delivers breathtaking acceleration, surging from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds and reaching a top speed of 310 km/h. Drawing inspiration from the 918 Spyder super sportscar’s boost strategy, this model achieves remarkable fuel efficiency, with an average consumption of 2.9 l/100 km in the New European Driving Cycle, alongside an impressive all-electric driving range of up to 50 kilometres. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid unequivocally underscores Porsche’s unwavering commitment to the future of electromobility, positioning itself as a flagship of sustainable performance.

A Unique Hybrid Powertrain: V8 Engine and Electric Motor Synergy

Building upon the success of the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, which paired a V6 engine with an electric motor, Porsche reaffirms the immense performance potential inherent in hybrid technology. The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid elevates this concept, uniting a robust 100 kW/136 hp electric motor with a formidable 404 kW/550 hp V8 engine. Mirroring the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, an electromechanically actuated decoupler within the Porsche hybrid module, utilizing an electric clutch actuator (ECA), ensures swift response times and enhanced driving comfort. Power transmission is managed by the rapid-shifting eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox, a standard feature across the second-generation Panamera range, directing power to the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) adaptive all-wheel drive system.

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid made its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show, showcasing its exceptional E-Performance capabilities. This luxury sedan achieves supercar-like acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in a staggering 3.4 seconds, while maintaining relentless traction even at elevated speeds. Coupled with a top speed of 310 km/h, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid establishes new performance benchmarks within its category. Standard air suspension further refines the driving experience, providing an unparalleled blend of luxury saloon comfort and sports car agility, a hallmark of the Panamera lineage.

Tri-Factor Excellence: Sportscar Performance, Luxury Comfort, and Optimized Efficiency

Powering the electric motor is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, boasting an energy capacity of 14.1 kWh. Charging convenience is prioritized, with a full charge achievable within six hours using a 10 A, 230-V connection. Opting for the 7.2-kW on-board charger and a 32 A, 230-V connection reduces charging time to a mere 2.4 hours, significantly enhancing usability. Charging can be initiated and managed via Porsche Communication Management (PCM) or the Porsche Connect app, compatible with smartphones and Apple Watch, offering remote control and scheduling. Furthermore, auxiliary air conditioning is integrated to pre-condition the cabin temperature during charging, maximizing passenger comfort.

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid seamlessly integrates performance, comfort, and efficiency. It defaults to the all-electric “E-Power” mode, enabling zero-emission driving for distances up to 50 kilometers, ideal for urban environments. Beyond a specific accelerator pedal pressure point, or when the battery charge diminishes below a set threshold, the system intelligently transitions to “Hybrid Auto” mode, engaging both the V8 engine and electric motor for maximum power delivery. This intelligent hybrid management results in remarkable fuel economy figures in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), achieving 2.9 l/100 km for premium petrol (with CO2 emissions of 66 g/km) and 16.2 kW/h/100 km for electric power consumption.

Available in Two Wheelbase Options

The 2017 Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, the new flagship of the second Panamera generation, launched in the European market in July 2017, with subsequent global market releases following in the latter half of the year. Its world premiere took place at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. Reflecting Porsche’s commitment to catering to diverse customer needs, the Gran Turismo is also offered in an Executive version, featuring an extended wheelbase increased by 150 millimetres, providing enhanced rear passenger space and comfort.

Standard equipment for the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is comprehensive and performance-focused, including Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) incorporating Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), Power Steering Plus, and striking 21-inch alloy wheels in the iconic 911 Turbo Design. Additional standard features encompass auxiliary air-conditioning, adaptive aerodynamic elements, and three-chamber air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The Executive model further benefits from standard rear axle steering, enhancing both agility and high-speed stability.
