2019 Mustang GT PP2 Long-Term Review: Two Years of Ownership and Performance Upgrades

It feels surreal to conduct a long-term review for a car I personally own, yet here we are, marking two years with my 2019 Mustang Gt Performance Package Level 2 (PP2). Since my initial review at four months, I’ve accumulated more insights and experiences to share about this remarkable vehicle.

At the time of its release, the PP2 stood as the most track-focused Mustang variant powered by the Coyote engine. While the Mach 1 has since claimed that title, the PP2 remains exceptionally special in my eyes. With 24,000 miles clocked over two years and a month of ownership, its performance-oriented design has proven to be surprisingly compatible with everyday driving. However, a few tweaks were necessary to unlock its full potential across all aspects of ownership. Now, with an additional 18,000 miles, three track days under its belt (details in a forthcoming article), and several modifications since my last review, let’s delve into the ongoing journey with my 2019 Mustang GT.

PP2: A Performance Package Refresher

The Performance Package Level 2, affectionately known as PP2 among enthusiasts, is a handling-focused upgrade available for 2019 Mustang GT models and onward. Exclusive to fastback models equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, opting for the PP2 necessitates including the 301A equipment group (featuring Sync 3 on a larger display, a mid-range audio system, and other interior enhancements) or the 401A group for those building upon a GT Fastback Premium.

Building upon the foundations of the GT Performance Package (PP1), which already incorporates Brembo front brakes, suspension refinements, and enhanced cooling, the PP2 elevates performance further. It introduces specially calibrated MagneRide dampers, upgraded sway bars, a prominent front splitter, a subtle rear decklid spoiler, and substantial 19×10.5-inch front and 19×11-inch rear wheels. These are factory-fitted with incredibly grippy 305/30R19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Recaro seats are also offered as an option for PP2 at both trim levels, almost considered a must-have for serious drivers.

The overarching objective of the PP2 is to fully harness the S550 chassis’s handling capabilities, delivering a sharper, more stable package that is primed for track environments. Ford’s press release at the time described it as a “passion project” undertaken by engineers during their “after-hours,” driven by a desire to create their ultimate Mustang. This passion is palpable from behind the wheel.

To maintain value, the PP2 ideally remains lightly optioned, as excessive add-ons can quickly encroach on GT350 pricing territory. My 2019 Mustang GT PP2 was specified with only essential options: cloth Recaro seats and the active exhaust system. Finished in Kona Blue, its appearance continues to captivate me daily.

The Upgrade to Less Aggressive Tires: A Significant Improvement

Predictably, the factory-equipped Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires required replacement relatively quickly. They endured approximately 7,000 miles, exhibiting more wear on the outer edges than the inner, despite proper factory alignment. While undeniably exceptional in terms of grip, their lifespan and cost made them unsustainable for regular use. I opted for Continental Extreme Contact Sports as replacements. While automotive journalists often extol the virtues of Michelin tires (rightfully so), the price difference between the Continentals and the Pilot Sport 4S was considerable. Given the 305/30R19 tire size on all four corners, the savings from choosing Continental effectively covered the cost of my initial racing helmet. This underscores a key aspect of 2019 Mustang GT PP2 ownership – tire expenses are substantial.

However, the Continentals have significantly enhanced the car’s overall driving experience. While a slight reduction in ultimate sharpness and raw grip compared to the Cup 2s is noticeable, the car’s road manners have improved dramatically. In my previous reviews, I highlighted a pronounced “tramlining” effect, where the aggressive Cup 2 tires would follow every road imperfection, tugging at the steering wheel. Even I was surprised by the extent to which the more street-oriented Continentals mitigated this issue. The tramlining is now completely absent, despite maintaining the same wide 305 front tires. Crucially, driving in wet conditions is now significantly less precarious.

Numerous excellent options exist within the max performance summer tire category, offering similar benefits. The ultimate decision often boils down to budget considerations. However, this tire change stands as the most impactful modification I’ve made to my 2019 Mustang GT PP2 to date.

Rock Guards: Essential Protection Against Road Debris

The second modification directly addresses the aforementioned wide 305-section front tires. These tires extend beyond the stock Mustang fender wells, leading to frequent inquiries at car shows about wheel spacers. This also means that road debris kicked up by the front tires readily sprays along the sides of the car. Frustrated with this constant issue, I installed rock guards. While initially hesitant due to aesthetic concerns, the RokBlokz flaps (despite the name) blend in surprisingly well. I now recommend this as a preemptive measure for all 2019 Mustang GT PP2 owners – safeguarding your car’s paint is a worthwhile quality-of-life improvement.

Shifter Enhancement: Reducing the MT82’s Shortcomings

A common criticism leveled at Mustangs, and particularly the MT82 manual transmission, is its shift feel. While some complain about broken shifter forks and general clunkiness, my primary issue was lockout during spirited driving. The first time I missed a 2nd-to-3rd gear shift exiting turn 6 at Atlanta Motorsports Park, I initially attributed it to driver error. However, it recurred even with deliberate shifting motions. It became apparent that I wasn’t missing shifts; I was experiencing lockout. This challenging corner revealed a flaw in a design choice by Ford.

To minimize Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH), Ford mounted the shifter to the body. While effective for street driving NVH reduction, this design falters under track conditions. Fortunately, the robust Mustang aftermarket offers solutions. Blowfish Racing provides a shifter support bracket that effectively converts the shifter to a transmission-mounted configuration. The difference was transformative. While shifter noise and heat slightly increased, the enhanced shift crispness is well worth the trade-off. Unexpectedly, 1st-to-2nd gear shifts also became smoother during regular street driving.

I am eager to return to AMP to definitively confirm the issue is resolved. However, the shifter performed flawlessly at the equally technical, yet faster, Road Atlanta circuit over five track sessions (more on this later). All manual Mustang owners should consider this support bracket or a short-throw shifter upgrade.

“The Tick” and Overall Reliability of the 2019 Mustang GT

Numerous online forum discussions revolve around “the tick,” a persistent ticking noise affecting newer Coyote engines. This sound, emanating from the engine bay, can occur under various conditions and has been sporadic in my experience. Sometimes faintly audible during warm-up, it would dissipate, while other times it persisted throughout drives.

Eventually, I had a Ford dealer inspect it, and it was deemed “within spec” according to Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 19-2144. Since switching to full synthetic 5w30 oil for my last track day and continuing its use through the summer, the noise has nearly vanished. Proper engine maintenance appears to mitigate this issue, but dealer verification provided peace of mind at no cost. Notably, some 2018 Mustang GTs experienced genuine engine problems related to this ticking sound, necessitating engine replacements.

To date, this dealer visit is the only service requirement beyond routine maintenance. No significant mechanical or electrical issues have emerged. Ownership has been remarkably trouble-free despite demanding usage. My 2019 Mustang GT PP2 has journeyed to the Tail of the Dragon in winter, undertaken road trips to Virginia International Raceway and Daytona, and been driven as intended on track. No warning lights, rough starts, or unexpected incidents. It consistently performs as expected, enduring all demands placed upon it.

Road Trip Capability Remains Strong

Initially, I was concerned that the PP2’s firmer suspension and Recaro seats might compromise long-distance comfort. However, this has largely not been the case. The MagneRide suspension in its normal setting is surprisingly compliant over extended distances. Drives to VIR and Daytona, each approximately 6 hours, resulted only in minor lower back discomfort, unrelated to the suspension or tire sidewall stiffness.

The Recaro seats excel at providing lateral support during spirited driving, complementing the PP2’s impressive grip. However, the lack of adjustable lumbar support becomes noticeable on longer journeys. I utilize a small memory foam pillow to alleviate this, but it remains a minor drawback for extended trips. My longest single-day drive to date, a 13-hour round trip to the Tail of the Dragon, is likely the limit of what I would comfortably undertake in a single day in this car. Even with the pillow, back and posterior soreness was present.

For typical drives to local driving roads, lasting 3-5 hours with enthusiastic driving segments, comfort is never an issue. The 2019 Mustang GT PP2 strikes a good balance between performance and reasonable long-distance comfort.

Exceptional Performance on Enthusiast Roads

Image alt text: 2019 Mustang GT PP2 cornering aggressively on mountain roads, showcasing its handling prowess and agility in twisty conditions.

While commuting and road trips are manageable, my primary motivations for purchasing the 2019 Mustang GT PP2 were mountain roads, Atlanta Motorsports Park, and Road Atlanta. A dedicated track review is forthcoming, but mountain roads constitute 99% of my spirited driving. Therefore, its performance in these environments was paramount. My usual routes consist of fast and medium-speed sweepers with interspersed switchbacks. On these roads, and every other driving scenario encountered, this car is truly exceptional.

Steering precision remains remarkable even with the less aggressive Continental tires, and the car eagerly changes direction. The rear end tracks the front accurately, although a subtle rear-end shimmy is perceptible on less-than-perfect road surfaces, particularly when applying power over mid-corner bumps. However, on smoother roads, it flows through sweepers beautifully with proper throttle management. Aggressive throttle application towards corner exits is easily managed without tire slip. Mid-corner throttle adjustments are responsive, and trail braking is effortless. Placing the car precisely where intended is consistently achievable, a valuable attribute given the car’s width.

The PP2 enhancements prioritize grip, extending beyond just the Cup 2 tires. The sheer amount of grip available is almost unbelievable. Traction loss is so infrequent that intentionally provoking wheelspin in a PP2 requires significant effort. Even launching from a slow roll in first gear with traction control disabled results in minimal or no tire chirp with full throttle application. The level of grip is almost foolproof.

Final Thoughts on the 2019 Mustang GT PP2

The Performance Package Level 2 fundamentally transforms the 2019 Mustang GT into a significantly enhanced vehicle. While the upgrades may appear subtle, lacking added horsepower or prominent aerodynamic elements, they represent a substantial improvement over standard Mustang GT models, exceeding what aftermarket modifications can fully replicate. Initially, I worried that the aggressive handling focus would compromise its road trip comfort. While technically true in stock tire form, switching to less aggressive tires effectively eliminates the major drawbacks.

My modified 2019 Mustang GT PP2 now fulfills every requirement I could demand of a sports car. It exhibits superior cornering and grip compared to any stock Mustang variant, all while remaining user-friendly, reliable, consistently enjoyable, and reasonably comfortable for longer drives. The fact that a Mustang is capable of such comprehensive performance remains impressive, and the privilege of owning this particular 2019 Mustang GT PP2 continues to be a source of pride.
