The 2019 Porsche Cayenne S is a vehicle that evokes a strong reaction. It’s a machine so flawlessly executed, so comprehensively capable, it almost feels unfair to the competition. Like that annoyingly perfect couple who seem to excel at everything, the Cayenne S sets a high bar in the luxury SUV segment, leaving you wondering if anything else truly compares. It’s no surprise then that it attracts a discerning clientele who demand nothing but the best.
The Porsche SUV Legacy: From Skepticism to Sales Success
The idea of a Porsche SUV was once met with raised eyebrows. Purists questioned if it diluted the brand’s sports car DNA. However, the Cayenne didn’t just save Porsche; it catapulted the brand to new heights. With over 700,000 units sold since its inception, the Cayenne’s success is undeniable. This number would be even more impressive if the smaller Porsche Macan hadn’t joined the lineup, further expanding Porsche’s SUV dominance.
This latest generation, launched the previous year, aims to elevate the Cayenne’s perfection even further. While subtle at first glance, the 2019 model is longer, lower, and wider, presenting a more athletic stance. A striking full-width LED light bar connecting the rear lights, complete with a distinctive 3D Porsche lettering, adds a modern touch of elegance.

Despite its undeniable elegance, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne S in its standard trim can feel a touch understated, especially considering its price point. To truly unlock the visual drama, you might need to ascend to the Turbo, Turbo S, or even the E-Hybrid models, which offer more visual flair.
This sense of needing “more” was a recurring theme during our time with the Cayenne S. Our test vehicle, although generously equipped with $30,000 in optional extras, still felt less visually impactful than rivals like the BMW X5 50i xDrive or even the Volvo XC90 T8. With a sticker price of $121,260, Porsche subtly reminds you that true exclusivity comes at an even higher premium.

Under the Hood: Potent Performance and Porsche DNA
Price considerations aside, the 2019 Cayenne S delivers on the core Porsche promise: exceptional engineering and performance. The base Cayenne is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbo engine producing 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, an engine shared with the Audi S4. It’s paired exclusively with an eight-speed Triptronic transmission and all-wheel drive. Impressively, the Cayenne boasts a towing capacity of 7,716 lbs (3,499 kg), surpassing the BMW X5 and positioning it at the top of its class.
Stepping up to the Cayenne S brings a significant boost in performance and Porsche-specific engineering. The engine is upgraded to a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6, now exclusive to Porsche and no longer sourced from the Volkswagen/Audi parts bin. This powerplant churns out 434 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, launching the Cayenne S from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in approximately five seconds.
Driving Experience: Refined Power, Subdued Sound
On the road, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne S exhibits that signature German car solidity, amplified to an almost unbelievable degree. The chassis is expertly tuned, effortlessly absorbing road imperfections while maintaining composure through corners, all while cocooning occupants in remarkable comfort.
Despite its considerable weight, the Cayenne S feels remarkably responsive. Engage Sport+ mode, and the transmission anticipates your every move, seamlessly downshifting to keep the engine in its sweet spot. The Cayenne S surges forward with impressive thrust across the rev range, delivering power that is both potent and remarkably refined.

Is it fast? Undeniably. Does it handle well? Absolutely. In fact, with the suspension firmed up, the Cayenne S shrinks around you, feeling less like an SUV and more like a very wide, tall, and substantial hot hatchback. This transformation is further enhanced by the optional adaptive suspension ($2,480), making it a surprisingly agile performer in the bends.
However, a minor critique emerges regarding the exhaust note. While the quad exhaust outlets hint at performance, the Cayenne S is surprisingly muted from inside the cabin. A touch more auditory feedback would enhance the driving experience, adding a layer of emotion that is present in rivals like the BMW X5 or the more raucous Jeep Cherokee Trackhawk. Ironically, this Porsche, in its quest for refinement, arguably feels less characterful than some of its competitors.

Everyday Practicality: Luxury for the Whole Family
Beyond its performance credentials, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne S excels as a luxurious and practical family vehicle. The cabin, while minimalist and focused on function, is impeccably assembled with a tangible sense of quality. Ergonomics are thoughtfully designed, from the natural placement of the driver’s armrest to the clear and intuitive layout of information. Porsche’s PCM infotainment system is not only visually appealing and responsive but also user-friendly, incorporating physical buttons for frequently used functions – a welcome touch in an era of touch-sensitive overload.
Porsche Cayenne S interior driver's perspective
Rear passenger space, seat comfort, and overall refinement are all top-tier. The cargo area, boasting 670 liters of space, outshines the BMW X5 (650 liters) and Audi Q7 (419 liters), making it a truly practical SUV. The only notable omission in terms of family-friendliness is the absence of a third-row seating option.

Ultimately, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne S is an exceptional vehicle. Its blend of performance, luxury, and practicality is genuinely hard to fault. The main caveat lies in Porsche’s extensive and often expensive options list. While the Cayenne S is undoubtedly superior to competitors like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, or Audi Q7, achieving your ideal specification can quickly escalate the price. Be prepared to pay a premium for the Porsche badge and its associated excellence, and be mindful of the tempting, yet costly, world of Porsche customization.
