The BMW 3-Series. For decades, it hasn’t just been a sport sedan, but the sport sedan. This reputation, forged in an era of analog driving and celebrated handling, still carries weight in today’s automotive landscape. Even as consumer tastes evolve and the market diversifies, the benchmark for luxury sport sedans remains intrinsically linked to the 3-Series lineage.
Our initial encounter with the 2020 Bmw M340i sparked considerable enthusiasm. After spending a week thoroughly immersed in the M340i experience, it was time to critically evaluate if this latest iteration upholds the revered 3-Series legacy and truly deserves the crown.
As someone with a history of BMW 3-Series ownership and extensive driving experience with various models, my affinity for this platform is deeply rooted yet discerning. While acknowledging areas for potential improvement – as with any vehicle – my appreciation for the 3-Series is enduring.
And, for the record, Journey’s music doesn’t resonate with everyone, but the 2020 BMW M340i might just resonate with driving enthusiasts.

Hit: The B58 Engine – A Lineage of Performance Excellence
When discussing the 2020 BMW M340i, superlatives are warranted, particularly concerning its engine. The performance on tap is genuinely breathtaking, exceeding expectations even for seasoned automotive journalists. This year’s M340i boasts an upgraded iteration of BMW’s turbocharged inline-six, now delivering a robust 382 horsepower, a notable increase from the previous 355 hp. This power translates to a blistering 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 4.1 seconds, placing it firmly in sports car territory.
The heart of the M340i, the BMW B58 engine, deserves a place in the pantheon of automotive legends. It’s a powerplant that excels in every application, embodying smooth power delivery and exhilarating performance. Turbo lag is virtually nonexistent, with power building rapidly and surging emphatically around 4,000 rpm. The engine eagerly revs beyond 6,000 rpm with relentless force, always feeling like it has more to give. On public roads, exploring the full extent of its capabilities often becomes an exercise in restraint, as the M340i consistently outpaces available road length.

Hit: Nimble Handling – A Compact Feel in a Larger Package
Despite the 2020 3-Series growing in dimensions – longer wheelbase, wider track, and lower stance – it remarkably drives like a smaller, more agile car. This is a significant achievement in chassis engineering. The M340i exhibits exceptional agility, pivoting through tight corners with the responsiveness of a sports coupe. Body roll isMinimal, even during aggressive cornering, contributing to a confident and planted feel.
The chassis strikes an ideal balance between stiffness and feedback, transmitting just the right amount of information to the driver, allowing for precise control and a strong sense of connection with the road. The standard M340i rear differential further enhances handling dynamics, enabling confident rear-end maneuvers. When the limits of grip are approached, the traction control system intervenes seamlessly, providing a safety net without feeling overly intrusive, a testament to BMW’s sophisticated vehicle dynamics technology.

Bonus: DSC Traction Mode – Unlocking Driving Fun
BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system includes a Traction mode, positioned as an intermediate setting between fully “On” and completely “Off.” This mode serves as an instant “fun button,” loosening the reins of electronic intervention to allow for more driver involvement and playful handling, without completely relinquishing safety. It encourages spirited driving while still providing a safety net, perfect for enjoying the M340i’s performance capabilities in a controlled manner.

Miss: Rear Foot Room – A Tight Squeeze for Larger Feet
While the 2020 3-Series boasts increased legroom compared to previous generations, the rear foot room presents a minor drawback, particularly for taller passengers. While the measured legroom is indeed improved, accommodating adults of similar stature in both front and rear seats is feasible, but foot space under the front seats can become restrictive. Passengers with larger shoe sizes might find their feet feeling cramped in the rear, impacting overall comfort on longer journeys.
This isn’t to suggest the M340i is incapable of comfortably carrying four adults, but rather a recommendation to claim the front seat whenever possible, especially for those prioritizing rear passenger comfort on extended trips.

Hit: Adaptive Dampers – A Masterclass in Ride Control
The optional adaptive dampers, a worthwhile $700 investment, significantly enhance the M340i’s ride and handling dynamics. Importantly, on the M340i, this feature is available as a standalone option, not bundled with less desirable prerequisite packages. The adaptive dampers offer a noticeable difference between Comfort and Sport settings. Sport mode firms up each corner of the suspension, resulting in sharper handling and reduced body roll during more spirited driving.
Even though the steering feel might not be the most communicative in its class, the adaptive dampers compensate by providing exceptional feedback through the chassis, effectively conveying road surface information and vehicle responses at each wheel. This contributes to a confident and engaging driving experience, allowing the driver to feel connected to the road.

Miss: The Price Tag – Premium Performance Comes at a Cost
The most significant hurdle for many potential buyers will be the M340i’s price. With our test vehicle reaching nearly $70,000, the cost of entry is substantial. Even opting for a lease, with a down payment of $2,500, still results in a monthly payment around $700, which, while potentially typical for BMW clientele, remains a considerable financial commitment. And, unfortunately, the pricing conversation doesn’t become more encouraging from here. The rising cost of performance luxury vehicles is a trend across the industry, and the M340i is no exception.

Hit: All-Around Excellence – A Refined and Capable Package
Beyond the highlighted hits, the 2020 BMW M340i excels in numerous other areas. The 8-speed automatic transmission is remarkably intuitive, almost anticipating gear changes before they’re needed. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system operates seamlessly, providing enhanced traction and stability in various driving conditions. The sport seats are both comfortable and supportive, offering an ideal driving position that surpasses many competitors.
The interior refinement is a step above, creating a luxurious and driver-focused environment. Fuel economy is surprisingly respectable for the performance on offer; averaging over 26 mpg during spirited driving is a testament to the engine’s efficiency. The aesthetics of the new 3-Series have been widely praised, representing a return to form for BMW design. Furthermore, the trunk offers ample cargo space. The list of positive attributes extends considerably, painting a picture of a well-rounded and highly capable sport sedan.

Miss: The Best 3-Series Might Not Be a Sedan
Perhaps the most compelling “miss” isn’t a flaw of the M340i itself, but rather the existence of the BMW X3 M40i. Sharing the same potent powertrain and delivering virtually identical performance, the X3 M40i offers increased practicality, enhanced comfort, and more rear legroom, often at a similar or even slightly lower price point. In many driving scenarios, the X3 M40i proves to be just as engaging and enjoyable, while offering the added versatility of a crossover.
For those prioritizing outright driving purity and the traditional sport sedan experience, the M340i holds a strong appeal. However, the X3 M40i presents a compelling alternative that challenges the conventional notion of the “ultimate driving machine” in sedan form. Our test X3 M40i, equipped similarly to the M340i, came in at $300 less. The only notable equipment difference was remote start, a $300 option on the M340i but unavailable on the X3. Wheel sizes were also slightly different, with the X3 M40i sporting 20-inch wheels compared to the M340i’s 19-inchers (though larger wheels are available for both).
The bottom line is that both the 2020 BMW M340i and X3 M40i represent significant performance and luxury, albeit at a price reflecting modern automotive standards. Our Tanzanite Blue M340i test vehicle reached an as-tested price of $69,570, including destination charges. While the price might raise eyebrows, the performance figures are equally attention-grabbing: both vehicles accelerate from 0-60 mph in just over four seconds, eclipsing the performance of an M3 from less than a decade ago.
In Conclusion:
For sedan purists, the 2020 BMW M340i remains a highly desirable and compelling sport sedan, upholding much of the 3-Series legacy. However, the rise of the performance crossover, exemplified by the BMW X3 M40i, presents a valid challenge to the traditional sport sedan dominance. While personal preferences for body style will undoubtedly play a role, the X3 M40i’s blend of performance, practicality, and value warrants serious consideration. Ultimately, choosing between the two might come down to whether you still “won’t stop believing” in the classic sport sedan, or if the crossover’s siren song is simply too strong to resist. And yes, personal music tastes remain subjective, even when evaluating exceptional automobiles like the 2020 BMW M340i.
