Why I Picked the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric Over a Tesla: A Driver’s Perspective

For years, I’ve been a car enthusiast, having owned a 2015 Toyota Prius and even test-driven the lauded Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. The allure of electric vehicles was always there, a future I was eager to embrace, but on my own terms, from the driver’s seat. That future arrived sooner than expected this past summer. As wildfire smoke filled the air, a stark reminder of environmental urgency, and with the ability to purchase a new vehicle, the choice became clear: an electric car was not just a want, but a responsible decision for my family and the environment. However, much to some people’s surprise, I didn’t go for a Tesla. Instead, I opted for a 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric, and here’s why.

My interest in the Kona Electric dates back to its initial 2019 release. When it came time to make a decision, three key factors tipped the scales in favor of the Kona Electric over Tesla’s offerings: driver-focused design, cost-effectiveness, and understated style.

1. Designed for the Human Driver: Intuitive Controls and Driver Assistance

My driving philosophy is rooted in being a responsible and attentive driver. With a clean driving record and a preference for control, the Kona Electric’s cockpit immediately resonated with me. Stepping inside and seeing a traditional speedometer directly behind the steering wheel was a welcome sight. Unlike Tesla’s minimalist approach, the Kona Electric prioritizes familiar, user-friendly controls, avoiding the sometimes overwhelming reliance on touchscreen interfaces for basic functions. The absence of “autopilot nonsense,” as I see it, is a significant plus. For drivers who enjoy being in command and appreciate straightforward vehicle operation, the Kona Electric offers a refreshing experience.

Consider the simple act of changing lanes. Tesla’s turn signals are designed for brief, two-second flashes, seemingly encouraging quick, and potentially less courteous, lane changes. While a more traditional, locking turn signal exists, its operation can be counterintuitive. This can lead to unintentional signaling in the opposite direction, a quirk that’s become somewhat of a Tesla highway signature. In contrast, the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric features conventional, dependable turn signals – they function exactly as expected, providing clear and consistent signaling for confident lane changes. This commitment to familiar controls underscores the Kona Electric’s driver-centric design.

2. Cost Savings and Practical Value: More Affordable EV Accessibility

While the current car market is experiencing inflated prices across the board, the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric still presents a significant cost advantage over comparable Tesla models, particularly the Model Y. The Kona Electric comes in at several thousand dollars less, making electric vehicle ownership more accessible without compromising on essential features and range. This price difference is especially compelling when considering that you’re not paying for features like Autopilot, which, in my opinion, are not only unnecessary but can introduce potential safety concerns by over-relying on automation. The Kona Electric delivers exceptional value by focusing on core driving needs and reliable EV technology, allowing you to save your money and enjoy a well-rounded electric vehicle. Plus, it has regular door handles – a small but appreciated touch of normalcy!

3. Understated Electric Vehicle Appeal: Practicality Without Pretentiousness

This might be less crucial for some, but I appreciate the Kona Electric’s subtle electric identity. It largely mirrors the design of the gasoline-powered Kona, avoiding the overtly futuristic or attention-grabbing aesthetics that some EVs adopt. In fact, only one person in a Costco parking lot has approached me with questions about it. I prefer this understated approach; the Kona Electric doesn’t shout “I’m electric and superior!” to everyone on the road. It simply presents itself as a practical and versatile hatchback. My quick summary to friends and family is that it’s essentially a “super Prius” – offering more ground clearance, increased horsepower, and a fully electric drivetrain. It’s a practical EV that blends seamlessly into everyday life.

Real-World Electric Driving: 1,000 Miles and Counting

Having driven the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric for over 1,000 miles, I can attest to its excellent performance in real-world conditions. My new job in the suburbs means a highway commute from downtown, which the Kona Electric handles with impressive efficiency. The commute is a quick 13 minutes by car, a stark contrast to the 1 hour and 4 minutes it would take with three buses using public transportation. While I value downtown work environments, remote work is the current reality for many.

Beyond commuting, charging the Kona Electric at home has been seamless. Living in a multifamily building, securing an electric parking spot was a priority before finalizing the Kona purchase. I’m pleased to report that the Kona Electric now occupies an EV charging stall daily, replacing a rarely used gas-powered Toyota 4Runner. Furthermore, I’m committed to renewable energy by setting up the Xcel account with either Windsource or Renewable Connect, ensuring the Kona Electric is powered by clean electricity.

Passing the Torch: The Prius Finds a New Home

With the arrival of the Kona Electric, my trusty Prius is moving on to a new chapter. It’s going to my mother, who currently drives a 2010 RAV-4 with a V6 engine. She’s eager for a more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly daily driver. This transition effectively doubles her fuel efficiency. We plan to retain the RAV-4 for occasional needs requiring a larger vehicle (it’s the last RAV-4 built on a truck platform), but its use will be significantly reduced.

After 1,000 miles, my experience with the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric has been overwhelmingly positive. While I recognize the complexities of car dependency, for my current needs, including commuting and visiting family, a vehicle remains essential. The Kona Electric has proven to be the ideal choice, blending practicality, efficiency, and a driver-focused approach in a compelling electric package.
