2022 Mustang GT500 Code Red: Unleashing Extreme Shelby Performance

The Shelby GT500 CODE RED represents the zenith of Mustang performance, born from experimental ambitions and customer desires for unparalleled power. Inspired by a 2008 experimental build that pushed the boundaries of the GT500, the CODE RED is a limited-edition marvel, transforming the already formidable GT500 into a true performance icon. This exclusive package features a hand-built twin-turbocharged V8 engine, meticulously engineered to deliver up to 1,300 horsepower and a staggering 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Beyond raw power, the 2022 Mustang Gt500 Code Red encompasses comprehensive upgrades to the suspension, cooling systems, and aesthetics, ensuring a holistic performance enhancement. Production is strictly limited to just 30 units, with only ten 2022 Mustang GT500 models slated for the CODE RED transformation, alongside ten from both the 2020 and 2021 production years.

Shelby American’s CODE RED marks a historic shift, transitioning an experimental project into a production vehicle for the first time. Shelby’s legacy is rich with iconic “EXP” experimental cars, including the Green Hornet, Little Red, and the original 2008 twin-turbo CODE RED. These experimental vehicles served as testbeds for innovation. For example, the ’67 GT500 Super Snake boasted a 427 race engine, while the Green Hornet, a ’68 hardtop, experimented with fuel injection and independent rear suspension. Little Red from 1967 featured twin superchargers and numerous other pioneering technologies. These experimental models paved the way for future advancements and showcased Shelby’s commitment to pushing automotive boundaries.

The genesis of the CODE RED concept can be traced back to 2008 when Shelby American dared to replace the supercharger of a GT500 with a twin-turbo setup on an experimental CODE RED Shelby GT500. Nelson Racing Engines re-engineered the then 5.4-liter V8, incorporating a dual-feed fuel system capable of injecting high-octane racing fuel when needed. To manage the immense heat generated, Shelby significantly enhanced the cooling system and collaborated with AMS to develop a speed-sensitive boost controller. Extensive drivetrain modifications and numerous performance enhancements were implemented. However, due to the prohibitive cost and extreme nature of this initial prototype, production was deemed unfeasible at the time.

For the production-ready 2020-2022 CODE RED, Shelby collaborated closely with key partners to create a robust, powerful, and dependable package. The 5.2L engine now boasts entirely new high-performance components, augmented by a premium intercooled twin-turbo system, a redesigned fuel system, and an advanced engine management system. On readily available 93 octane pump gas, the 2022 Mustang GT500 Code Red delivers over 1,000 horsepower and 780 lb-ft of torque. When fueled with E85 Ethanol, this output escalates to an astonishing 1,300+ horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque, solidifying its position as a performance leader.

However, the current generation GT500 CODE RED is far more than just a powertrain upgrade. It encompasses a comprehensive transformation, featuring a widebody package with distinctive wheels and tires, upgraded axles, refined suspension tuning, a bespoke interior, unique badging, a lightweight carbon fiber hood, and much more. Each 2022 Mustang GT500 Code Red owner receives membership to Team Shelby, the global club founded by Carroll Shelby in 2008, and their vehicle will be officially documented in the Shelby Registry. The package MSRP starts at $224,995, excluding the cost of the base car. Production is currently underway in Las Vegas, and owners of 2020-2022 model year Shelby GT500s interested in transforming their vehicles into a CODE RED edition are encouraged to contact Shelby American for further details.
