2023 Civic Si Autocross Debut: Seeking Performance Upgrades

As a new owner of a 2023 Civic Si, I was eager to test its mettle at my first autocross events this summer. My second event at Summit Point in WV, however, was a humbling experience. Finishing last in the street class, a significant 12 seconds behind the leader (a highly modified ND Miata), and even trailing a 2005 Toyota Corolla was definitely not the result I was hoping for. To be fair, the Corolla had aftermarket wheels, performance tires, and an exhaust, but being outperformed by an older Corolla was still a bit deflating.

Currently, my 2023 Civic Si is completely stock, riding on the factory Goodyear all-season tires. The car’s handling in autocross conditions, particularly with sliding and understeer around corners, was far from ideal. I’m also aware that driver skill is a major factor, and as my 21-year-old son, an experienced autocrosser with a modified NB Miata, pointed out, the “driver mod” is paramount.

Nevertheless, to improve my standings beyond the bottom of the pack, I recognize the need for some strategic modifications to my 2023 Civic Si. Here’s what I’m considering for performance enhancements:

  1. Lightweight Wheels and Summer Performance Tires: I’m leaning towards Konig Dekagram 18 x 8.5 wheels. For tires, I’m considering slightly wider 245/40 summer performance tires with a 300 treadwear rating for longevity, but I’m open to recommendations.
  2. Rear Sway Bar: The SiriMoto 20mm rear sway bar is on my radar to improve handling.
  3. Rear Motor Mount: While a rear motor mount upgrade is tempting, I’m concerned it might bump me out of the Street Class and into STH, which I want to avoid for now.
  4. High Volume Air Intake: A PRL high volume air intake is another potential upgrade to enhance engine performance.
  5. Exhaust System: I’m considering the MAP catback exhaust, specifically the “street” version, for a better exhaust note and potential performance gains.

The total investment for these modifications would be around $3500. My main concern is whether this investment is worthwhile. Will these upgrades significantly improve my autocross performance, or will my driving skills still be the limiting factor? I’m keen to follow this discussion and learn from others’ experiences with autocrossing the 2023 Civic Si and similar modifications.
