2023 Chevy Traverse RS: Is This the Grown-Up SUV You Need?

For years, I stubbornly clung to the idea that SUVs were the enemy. Cramming kids and car seats into a compact sedan was my daily battle, a chaotic symphony of Cheerios and Spider-Man versus Batman debates. The logic of a bigger car was lost on me, perhaps a lingering effect of too much Top Gear or a refusal to admit I was past my sports car prime. Then came a week with the 2023 Chevy Traverse RS, and suddenly, the idea of “growing up” behind the wheel didn’t seem so bad.

My preconceptions about the Traverse were, admittedly, dull. It sounded like just another beige box in the SUV world. That changed the moment I experienced the sheer practicality of its interior. Reaching the car seat anchor? No contortions in the trunk, no awkward arm angles. In the Traverse, I simply walked between the second-row captain’s chairs. It was a revelation, a moment of clarity: Could I actually… like an SUV?

Driving the Traverse RS felt surprisingly… responsible. It was the feeling of embracing my role as a parent, ditching the automotive fantasies for genuine everyday usability. And, dare I say it, it felt pretty good.

Diving Deeper into the 2023 Traverse RS

The Chevrolet Traverse occupies the full-size, three-row SUV segment in Chevy’s lineup. The current generation, the second, debuted in 2017 as a 2018 model, built on GM’s C1XX platform shared with the GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT6. While the “RS” badge might evoke sporty Camaro heritage, in the Traverse RS, it’s primarily an aesthetic upgrade. The RS trim distinguishes itself with black exterior accents – badges, window trim – along with 20-inch black wheels and a black interior featuring red accents. Mechanically, it mirrors other Traverse trims, offering the same capable performance.

These visual tweaks, however, make a significant impact. The standard Traverse, while competent, can blend into the background of family SUVs. The RS trim, with its black wheels and badges, injects a dose of personality, especially when paired with the vibrant Radiant Red paint of the test vehicle. While aesthetics alone can’t revolutionize a design, the RS package undoubtedly presents the Traverse in its most appealing light.

Inside the 2023 Traverse Rs, the sole interior option is a black scheme with red stitching. The design is generally attractive, if not groundbreaking. While some cheaper plastics are present, this is expected in a three-row family SUV in this price range (under $50,000 as tested when fully equipped). Crucially, the ergonomics are excellent. Physical buttons abound for key functions, and the traditional gauges are clear and easily readable. The Traverse RS interior prioritizes ease of use and a stress-free environment. It’s about function and comfort, not unnecessary flash.

The familiar theme continues under the hood. The 2023 Traverse RS, like all Traverse models, is powered by a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine. It delivers 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option, as equipped on the test vehicle.

Behind the Wheel of the Chevrolet Traverse RS

The driving experience of the Traverse RS was surprisingly refined. Despite being a front-wheel-drive based, large SUV, it felt planted and secure on the road. The gear selector had a reassuringly solid feel, the steering offered substantial weight that built naturally as you turned, and body control was commendable for its size. It manages to navigate corners without excessive wallowing or swaying. For a vehicle of this size and price point, the body control was genuinely impressive.

However, this composed handling comes with a trade-off in ride comfort. Despite its generous ride height, long suspension travel, and tall tire sidewalls, the Traverse RS can feel a bit firm over bumps. While not jarring, it’s noticeable, and particularly sharp impacts might unsettle passengers slightly. On the positive side, the comfortable seats compensate well, ensuring passenger comfort even on longer trips. The seats prioritize comfort over sporty bolstering, which also makes entry and exit easier – a boon for family duties.

The Traverse’s size is always apparent. Thick A-pillars can hinder forward visibility in corners, and the wide cabin makes it feel substantial in tight spaces like drive-throughs and parking lots. Thankfully, standard surround-view parking cameras are a lifesaver. Without them, maneuvering in confined spaces would be significantly more challenging.

The brakes inspire confidence, crucial in a vehicle of this size. The pedal feel is initially soft, but once you adjust to the pedal travel, the stopping power is reassuring and consistent.

The 3.6-liter V6 engine, while lacking the turbocharging of some rivals like the Ford Explorer, provides ample power for hauling a full load of passengers and cargo. The nine-speed automatic transmission is well-matched to the engine, operating smoothly and unobtrusively in various driving conditions. The Traverse RS excels in its core mission: providing practical utility and making daily life simpler.

Highlights and Drawbacks of the 2023 Traverse RS

The primary appeal of the Traverse RS lies in its user-friendliness. The expansive cabin effortlessly accommodates passengers and luggage, numerous cupholders and storage bins are readily available, and a generous array of USB and charging ports keeps devices powered and passengers entertained.

The second-row captain’s chairs are a standout feature. They simplify car seat installation and access, and even young children can easily climb in and out independently, saving valuable time and effort for parents. Third-row access is also well-designed; the second-row seats fold conveniently, and the third row itself is surprisingly accommodating even for average-sized adults. While adults might find it a bit cramped on extended journeys, it’s perfectly suitable for children or shorter trips.

However, the Traverse RS isn’t without its shortcomings. While the V6 engine is adequately powerful, it can sound somewhat coarse and unrefined, particularly at higher RPMs. Although most drivers may not frequently push the engine to its limits, when needed, the V6 lacks a truly enthusiastic character. Furthermore, while the interior is functional, comfortable, and spacious, the design is somewhat bland and might become monotonous over time.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse RS: Features, Options, and Competition

The RS trim level primarily focuses on aesthetics but also includes some desirable standard features not found on lower trims. These include power-folding mirrors, Chevy’s Convenience and Confidence package (upgraded infotainment, heated seats, remote start), a heated steering wheel, and second-row captain’s chairs. The test vehicle was well-equipped without any additional options, suggesting the RS trim offers a strong level of standard equipment that should satisfy most buyers.

The 2023 Chevy Traverse RS competes in the fiercely contested three-row SUV segment. Rivals in the same price range (around $48,440 starting) include the Honda Pilot Touring, Jeep Grand Cherokee L Altitude, and Hyundai Palisade Limited, among others. While the Traverse boasts a genuinely spacious third row, it’s worth noting that it is an older design compared to some of its newer competitors, with its last significant refresh occurring several years ago.

Sustainability and Fuel Economy

One area where the Traverse lags behind some competitors is fuel economy. The 3.6-liter V6 is a proven and reliable engine with adequate power. However, its naturally aspirated design means it consumes more fuel compared to some competitors who have adopted turbocharged engines. For example, Toyota’s updated Highlander features a turbocharged four-cylinder that improves both low-end torque and fuel efficiency. A similar engine update could enhance the Traverse’s appeal in today’s market.

Value and Final Verdict

Starting around $50,000 for an all-wheel-drive 2023 Traverse RS, it represents a significant amount of vehicle for the money. It comfortably accommodates up to seven passengers, offers comfortable seating, excellent cabin technology (the surround-view cameras are particularly impressive), and handles surprisingly well for its size.

The 2023 Chevy Traverse RS may not be the most stylish SUV in its class, the ride can be a bit firm, and fuel economy could be better. However, spending a week with it was more enjoyable than anticipated. It evokes the feeling of a familiar, comfortable sweater – practical, reliable, and reassuring, especially in challenging weather. While the SUV life wasn’t initially on my radar, the Traverse RS makes a compelling case for its practicality and ease of use in everyday adult life, qualities that are increasingly valuable.
