2024 BMW X7 M60i: Owner’s Honest Review – Is it Worth the Upgrade?

Having recently acquired my 2024 Bmw X7 M60i, I’m thoroughly enjoying the vehicle. However, an initial paint issue necessitated a quick return to the dealership for repair, placing me temporarily in a 2024 BMW X7 40i loaner. This unexpected switch provided a unique opportunity to directly compare the two models, highlighting the tangible differences beyond just the price tag. While both are undeniably BMW X7s, the nuances in features and performance are significant, especially when considering the upgrade to the M60i.

The interior ambiance immediately reveals a distinction in luxury. My M60i boasts the Executive Package and leather upholstery, a combination that elevates the cabin environment considerably. Stepping into the 40i loaner, equipped with Sensafin upholstery, the difference is palpable. While Sensafin is a commendable material, it lacks the supple softness and premium feel of genuine leather. The seats in the 40i, despite their pleasant design, don’t offer the same level of support and contoured comfort as the leather seats in my M60i. This difference might be further accentuated by the climate package and ventilated seats present in my personal vehicle, contributing to a more tailored and comfortable seating experience overall.

Moving to the second row, the bench seat in the loaner creates a noticeably more confined feeling compared to the captain’s chairs in my M60i. The sightlines from the rear window also feel somewhat more restricted with the bench configuration. Conversely, the lighter headliner in the loaner does contribute to a brighter cabin atmosphere. While I appreciate the panoramic Sky Lounge roof in my M60i, it undeniably casts a slightly darker tone within the black headliner interior. Opting for captain’s chairs was a deliberate choice, although I do find myself wishing for a slightly wider gap between the armrests for enhanced spaciousness. Additionally, the placement of the car seat anchor on the bench seat back, as opposed to the floor in the captain’s chair configuration, seems like a more practical design choice.

One of the pivotal factors driving my decision towards the M60i was the inclusion of four-wheel steering and the Dynamic Handling Package (DHP). Experiencing the 40i loaner without these features has dramatically underscored their impact. The turning radius and overall maneuverability of the M60i are significantly superior, far exceeding my initial expectations. This enhanced agility is particularly beneficial in tight spaces, such as my home garage and the parking structure at work, making daily driving noticeably easier and more enjoyable.

Regarding the infotainment system, my M60i is equipped with iDrive 8.5, a feature I was among the first at my dealership to experience. The upgrade from iDrive 8 is substantial. The user interface is significantly more intuitive and visually appealing, particularly compared to the “card” layout of the previous iteration. The streamlined homescreen and customizable shortcut buttons at the screen’s bottom minimize the need to navigate through multiple menus, enhancing ease of use. On both the M60i and the 40i loaner, I’ve noticed a slight lack of tactile feedback from the physical buttons on the center console. They require a somewhat precise press to register, a minor point but a slight step down from the more definitive click of the buttons in my older 2020 BMW X3.

Interestingly, the wireless charging location and adjacent small storage compartment in the 40i loaner are preferable to the heated/cooled cupholders in my M60i. The 40i’s layout makes placing and retrieving my phone much simpler, and the additional small storage is a welcome convenience for change or other small items. If given the choice, I might opt for this configuration over the heated/cooled cupholders.

The M steering wheel in the M60i is another tactile upgrade. Its design and materials contribute to a more sporty and premium feel in hand, enhancing the driving experience.

While the 40i is undoubtedly a capable and pleasant vehicle to drive with adequate power for daily needs, the M60i elevates the driving experience to a different level. The M60i is noticeably more exhilarating and the engine note is significantly more engaging. It possesses a more pronounced sound profile, not overtly loud but with a clear indication of its performance potential. At times, it exhibits a subtle whine, hinting at its eagerness to accelerate and holding gears in anticipation of more assertive throttle input.

The M brakes in the M60i inspire significantly greater confidence. The standard brakes in the 40i feel adequate for normal driving but occasionally seem to strain under the vehicle’s weight during more abrupt stops, such as at a traffic light. The M brakes provide a more reassuring and robust stopping power, particularly important in a vehicle of this size and performance caliber.

Finally, the Bowers & Wilkins sound system in my M60i is a noteworthy enhancement, both in terms of audio fidelity and visual appeal compared to the standard audio setup in the 40i.

In conclusion, having experienced both the 2024 BMW X7 M60i and the 40i, the upgrade to the M60i, with its enhanced performance, luxurious interior, and advanced features, is undeniably worthwhile. The differences are not just incremental; they represent a significant step up in driving dynamics, comfort, and overall vehicle refinement. For those considering the 2024 BMW X7, the M60i represents a compelling proposition for a truly elevated driving experience.
