I recently spent a week with the 2024 Chevrolet Trax, and despite the snowy conditions limiting my driving, I got a good feel for this compact SUV. Honestly, I kept double-checking the price tag – it’s that surprisingly affordable. The model I drove was listed at $25,590, plus a $1,095 destination charge. But the base model starts even lower, at just $20,400 plus destination, making the total a mere $21,495. In today’s market, where the average car price is significantly higher, the Trax stands out as a remarkable value.

In a time where automakers often focus on high-end vehicles, Chevrolet has nailed the essentials with the 2024 Trax. Building a great car at the top of the market is one thing, but crafting a truly good vehicle at an accessible price point is a real challenge. It requires smart choices about where to invest and where to economize. The Trax is a testament to Chevrolet’s success in walking that tightrope, delivering a vehicle that feels far more premium than its price suggests.

So, where did Chevrolet manage to keep costs down? The most apparent area is the powertrain. The 2024 Trax comes exclusively with front-wheel drive, no all-wheel drive option available. However, equipped with proper snow tires, this crossover proves perfectly capable in winter conditions, negating the need for AWD for most drivers. The engine is a 1.2-liter turbocharged unit paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. While the engine isn’t the smoothest or most aurally pleasing, it’s functional and efficient. Chevrolet understands that buyers in this segment prioritize value and practicality over engine refinement. Inside, you’ll find some hard plastics, but that’s common even in higher-priced vehicles. The key is strategic material placement. Chevrolet has cleverly used nicer materials in key touchpoints to give a surprisingly upscale feel to the interior.

The heated steering wheel is a welcome touch, and the shifter and its boot feel surprisingly premium. The seats are comfortable and appear well-constructed, free of cheap-looking wrinkles or uneven stitching. The interior design is genuinely well-executed. While leather and wood trim could elevate it further, they would also significantly increase the price, detracting from the Trax’s core appeal. Remarkably, the Trax also offers ample rear passenger space and a generous cargo area, further enhancing its practicality.

Design is another area where Chevrolet excelled without inflating the cost. The 2024 Trax is arguably one of the most attractive small crossovers available. Despite being larger than its predecessor, it maintains a sleek and agile appearance. The Cacti Green color option further enhances its visual appeal.
While crossovers might not be my personal preference, their market dominance is undeniable. For anyone seeking a practical, affordable, and surprisingly well-rounded vehicle in this competitive segment, the 2024 Chevy Trax is an exceptionally compelling option. It’s refreshing to encounter a car that genuinely exceeds expectations for its price point.
