2024 Jetta Reviews: Is This Budget-Friendly Sedan Still Worth It?

Press vehicles often come loaded with all the bells and whistles, showcasing the best a car manufacturer has to offer. This can sometimes paint an unrealistic picture for everyday consumers looking at base models. Fortunately, Volkswagen Canada understands the importance of demonstrating the value proposition of their more accessible vehicles. They provided us with a base-model 2024 Volkswagen Jetta Trendline – known as the S model in the US – for review. This experience highlighted just how much value and practicality can be found in a well-equipped, budget-friendly sedan.

The current generation Volkswagen Jetta, now in its seventh iteration, is nearing the end of its cycle before a full model change for 2025. However, for those seeking a cost-effective, spacious, and fuel-efficient daily driver, the 2024 Jetta remains a compelling option. The beauty of the Trendline trim is that it delivers a surprising amount of car for your money, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious buyers.

Pros:

  • Affordable price point for a well-equipped sedan.
  • Spacious interior offering comfort for passengers and cargo.
  • Impressive real-world fuel economy, saving you money at the pump.

Cons:

  • Engine performance can feel lacking before the turbo kicks in.
  • Handling is not as sharp or engaging as some competitors.
  • Styling may not appeal to everyone, considered somewhat bland.

This particular 2024 Volkswagen Jetta Trendline was provided by Volkswagen Canada’s press fleet. It arrived in pristine condition with a full tank of fuel. All fuel expenses incurred during the testing period were covered independently. 2024 VW Jetta: Initial Design and Style Assessment

Having been on the market since 2018, the seventh-generation Jetta’s design hasn’t fully captured everyone’s hearts, including ours. The rear styling bears a resemblance to the Honda Civic, while the front fascia can be described as somewhat generic and lacking in distinctive character. This Jetta is also the largest in its history, approaching midsize sedan dimensions, a departure from the Jetta’s traditional compact footprint. Previous generations were often seen as sedan versions of the Golf, offering a tightly packaged and refined feel, sometimes even drawing comparisons to a budget Audi. This current model, however, can appear elongated and somewhat less premium in its overall aesthetic.

However, the upcoming 2025 model year facelift is expected to address some of these styling concerns. The refresh promises cleaner front and rear designs, along with potentially more attractive wheel options and updated color choices, aiming to inject more visual appeal into the Jetta’s appearance.

The primary distinction between the Jetta lineups in the US and Canada lies in the trim level names and configurations. The US market offers an additional trim level, resulting in a hierarchy of S, Sport, SE, and SEL. In Canada, the base model is designated as Trendline, followed by Comfortline, which essentially combines features found in the US Sport and SE trims. The top-tier trim in Canada is the Highline.

Regardless of the market, the 2024 Jetta provides excellent value for money. Even in its base Trendline (or S) form, the Jetta includes desirable features such as blind spot monitoring, forward collision avoidance, and Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, enhancing both safety and convenience. We’ll delve deeper into the Digital Cockpit shortly.

US Market Trims Canadian Market Trims
S ($21,435 USD) Trendline ($26,160 CAD)
Sport ($22,585 USD) Comfortline ($29,160 CAD)
SE ($28,875 USD) Highline ($34,160 CAD)

2024 Jetta Driving Dynamics and Engine Performance Review

Despite reservations about its styling, the 2024 Jetta proved to be surprisingly impressive in several key areas, most notably its powertrain. The turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while producing a modest 158 horsepower, delivers a robust 184 lb-ft of torque. Our test vehicle was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, which is arguably all you need for enjoyable daily driving.

The manual shifter isn’t as refined as a Golf GTI’s, but it’s far from unpleasant. Its positive engagement and light clutch action make it perfectly functional and even enjoyable. The engine truly stands out as the highlight here. This unassuming powerplant allows the Jetta, weighing in at around 2,900 pounds, to accelerate with surprising eagerness, offering enough power for confident overtaking maneuvers when driven assertively. However, the engine’s character is heavily reliant on boost. Attempting to accelerate from a standstill in second gear revealed a significant lag before the turbocharger spooled up and delivered power. Off-boost, the engine feels noticeably anemic.

Once the turbo is engaged, the engine provides a satisfying surge of low-end torque and maintains strong performance throughout the rev range. It’s smooth, linear, and offers enough power to make driving genuinely fun. However, the chassis and suspension unfortunately don’t quite match the engine’s enthusiasm. This is in stark contrast to the more performance-oriented Jetta GLI. Unlike the Golf, the base Jetta doesn’t inherit the same level of athleticism. The suspension is tuned for comfort, resulting in a softer ride that doesn’t encourage spirited driving. The Nexen N’Fera AU7 tires further contribute to this, lacking grip when pushed even moderately hard. The Jetta’s chassis is clearly not designed for dynamic handling.

However, when driven at a more relaxed pace, the Jetta’s refinement level is truly remarkable for its class. It possesses a maturity comparable to a Mazda3 and a composed ride quality similar to a Honda Civic. The Jetta feels well-composed and solid. During testing on rough roads, there were no unwanted rattles or noises. The car tracks straight and responds predictably to steering inputs. For everyday commuting and general driving, the suspension damping is excellent. It’s easy to envision daily driving and living with the 2024 Jetta.

The Jetta’s engine impressed not only with its performance but also with its exceptional fuel economy. It’s rare to encounter a non-hybrid vehicle this frugal. EPA estimates for the base, six-speed manual Jetta are already impressive at 34 MPG combined. However, in real-world testing, we slightly exceeded this figure, achieving 34.5 MPG without consciously trying to maximize fuel efficiency. This makes the 2024 Jetta a great choice for those looking to save money on fuel costs.

Interior Design, Space, and Comfort of the 2024 Jetta

The Jetta’s interior prioritizes functionality over extravagance. It provides what you need without unnecessary frills. The base model uses a traditional key for ignition and physical knobs for climate control adjustments. While the overall build quality is adequate, some hard plastics reveal cost-saving measures. However, Volkswagen has ensured that frequently touched surfaces have a quality look and feel.

Technology and User-Friendliness in the 2024 Jetta

Technology features in the base Jetta are straightforward and user-friendly. The infotainment system, while a more basic version of Volkswagen’s App-Connect (featuring a 6.5-inch screen), is responsive and easy to navigate. In an era of increasingly complex infotainment systems, the Jetta’s simplicity is refreshing, allowing for quick and easy access to essential functions. Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, once a feature reserved for higher-end Audi models, is included even in this base Jetta trim. It allows drivers to customize the instrument cluster display in three different layouts at the touch of a button. This adds a touch of sophistication and personalization to an otherwise budget-oriented vehicle. The system is quick and lag-free, enhancing the overall user experience.

Cargo and Storage Capacity of the 2024 Jetta

The Jetta’s generous dimensions translate to impressive cargo capacity for its class. The trunk offers more space than a Toyota Corolla (13.1 cu-ft) and is only slightly smaller than a Honda Civic (14.8 cu-ft), making it highly practical for everyday needs.

  • | Minimum Cargo Capacity (with rear seats in place)
  • | 14.1 cu-ft

Driving the base model 2024 Jetta Trendline reveals that affordable cars have come a long way. It also highlights how accustomed we’ve become to expecting premium features even in budget-friendly vehicles. While this review noted minor criticisms regarding interior materials, handling limits, and understated styling, these are minor points in the context of the Jetta’s overall value.

Ultimately, the 2024 Jetta excels at being a Jetta – a practical, reliable, and value-oriented sedan. It offers a comfortable ride, adequate power, and ample space for passengers and cargo, all at a competitive price point. For buyers seeking a dependable and economical daily driver without unnecessary frills, the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta Trendline (S model) remains a highly recommendable option. It provides everything you truly need in a compact sedan and proves that you don’t have to break the bank to get a well-rounded and capable vehicle.
