2024 Z4 Manual Transmission: A Porsche-Like Shift Experience in the New BMW Roadster

The 2024 BMW Z4 M40i has addressed a long-standing critique of BMW’s manual transmissions, delivering a driving experience that now rivals Porsche in shift quality. According to Nick Gerstner, Product Manager of BMW Z4, this updated transmission was specifically engineered for the new 2024 Z4, setting it apart even from the shared transmission in the Toyota Supra.

Historically, BMW’s 6-speed manuals, particularly in models like the M2, M3, and M4, have been described as “vague and rubbery,” with drivers noting long throws and a challenging first-to-second gear transition. The 2024 z4 directly tackles these concerns. While the transmission shares a ZF 6-speed base similar to the Supra, BMW has refined the shift linkage and shortened the gear lever in the 2024 z4. This results in a markedly different and superior shifting feel. Supra opted for a unique tuning to match its character, and BMW took a similar, but distinct approach, informed by customer feedback.

The result in the 2024 z4 M40i is a “fantastic” six-speed manual. The shorter shifter provides a more direct and engaging feel, and the shifts are now quicker and more precise, drawing comparisons to the benchmark Porsche transmissions. The often-problematic first to second gear shift is now “extremely smooth.” Complementing this refined manual transmission is the powerful B58 six-cylinder engine, creating a compelling combination. The rev-matching feature further enhances the driving experience, and for purists, it can be easily disabled. The 2024 z4 M40i, with its newly engineered manual gearbox, offers a truly rewarding and engaging sports car experience.
