2025 Lexus GX 550: Elevating Off-Road Luxury with Enhanced Features

Following its highly anticipated redesign, the 2025 Lexus Gx 550 arrives with a suite of standard upgrades, reinforcing its position as the premier luxury SUV for adventure. The new model year introduces a standard one-inch suspension lift on the Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades, further amplifying its already formidable off-road capabilities. Across the entire GX lineup, the Lexus Memory System and power tilt-and-telescopic steering column now come standard, adding to the vehicle’s refined comfort and convenience. With a starting MSRP of $65,585*, including Delivery, Processing and Handling Fee, the 2025 Lexus GX 550 offers an unmatched blend of luxury, technology, and rugged performance for discerning drivers.

Built on the GA-F Platform for Superior Performance

The foundation of the 2025 Lexus GX 550 is the robust GA-F platform, shared with the flagship LX. This body-on-frame construction is engineered for exceptional strength and reduced weight, resulting in enhanced body rigidity and improved on-road handling dynamics – key elements of the Lexus Driving Signature. Specifically designed to endure the stresses of off-road driving, the GA-F platform optimizes suspension performance, enabling stable wheel articulation and consistent tire contact across uneven terrain, all while maintaining a composed and comfortable cabin environment. This strengthened frame also provides a solid base for owners to personalize their GX with a wide array of Lexus dealer-available accessories, including rooftop tents and recovery kits, accessible through the Associated Accessory Parts (AAP) Program.

Advanced Suspension System for On and Off-Road Mastery

To achieve a harmonious balance between exceptional off-road capability and refined on-road manners, the 2025 GX 550 employs a sophisticated suspension system. The front utilizes a double-wishbone configuration, known for its robust design and ability to maintain consistent geometry even under demanding conditions. At the rear, a multi-link suspension further enhances both off-road articulation and on-road comfort. For an even more adaptable ride, an available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) continuously adjusts damping forces in real-time, responding to changing road surfaces and driving inputs to optimize ride quality and handling. Furthermore, Electronic Power Steering (EPS) is standard across all GX models, providing enhanced steering feel and responsiveness in both on-road and off-road driving scenarios.

Potent Twin-Turbo V6 Engine and 10-Speed Transmission

Powering the 2025 Lexus GX 550 is a highly capable and efficient twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine, paired with a smooth and responsive 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. This advanced powertrain delivers 349 horsepower, a significant increase over the previous generation’s V8 engine which produced 301 horsepower. Torque output also sees a substantial boost to 479 lb.-ft., providing ample low-end grunt for confident off-road excursions and effortless highway cruising. Despite the increased power, the twin-turbo V6 achieves an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 21 MPG, demonstrating impressive efficiency. The twin turbochargers ensure consistent and readily available acceleration, offering precise power delivery in any driving situation. For those needing to tow, the GX boasts a towing capacity of up to 9,063 lbs for Premium, Premium+, and Overtrail+ grades, and 9,096 lbs for the Overtrail grade when equipped with the standard tow hitch receiver.

Off-Road Dominance: 2025 GX 550 Overtrail and Overtrail+

The Lexus GX has long been celebrated for its exceptional off-road prowess, and the 2025 GX 550 continues this legacy, particularly in the Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades. Standard Full-Time 4WD provides consistent traction and responsiveness across varied terrains. Exclusively for the 2025 model year, the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims now feature a standard one-inch suspension lift, increasing the minimum running ground clearance to an impressive 9.84 inches.

A crucial component for off-road capability is the standard Torsen® limited-slip locking center differential, present on all GX models. This differential automatically distributes engine power 50:50 between the front and rear axles, maximizing traction in low-grip situations and minimizing wheel slippage. During cornering, the Torsen® differential intelligently adjusts power distribution to the rear wheels based on load, ensuring controlled performance. In straight-line driving, it reacts seamlessly to changing road conditions, contributing to overall vehicle stability.

Furthermore, the Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades exclusively offer an electronically controlled locking rear differential. Activated via a console-mounted switch, this system locks the rear axles, distributing power evenly to both rear wheels, ensuring they rotate at the same speed for maximum traction in challenging terrains. In specific scenarios, the locking rear differential is designed to direct power to the wheel with the most grip.

The 2025 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail and Overtrail+ models are also equipped with the standard Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS). This system provides an optimal balance between off-road flexibility and on-road handling stability by automatically adjusting the stabilizer bars. E-KDSS can lock and unlock the front and rear stabilizer bars independently based on driving conditions, speed, steering input, and the selected Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) mode, enhancing both control and wheel articulation.

For extreme off-road situations, Crawl Control is available when the vehicle is in low range (L4). This system allows the GX to move forward or in reverse at one of five driver-selectable low-speed settings. Crawl Control intelligently manages engine output and braking pressure to minimize tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior, allowing the driver to focus on navigating obstacles. The GX boasts impressive approach, breakover, and departure angles of up to 26, 24, and 21 degrees respectively, further enhancing its off-road prowess.

The MTS system is designed to optimize powertrain and braking control based on the selected terrain mode. In L4, MTS offers Auto, Sand, Mud, and Rock modes. In H4, it provides Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow modes. When MTS is engaged, the Multi-Terrain Monitor is automatically activated, utilizing four cameras within the Panoramic View Monitor System (PVM) to provide enhanced visibility of the vehicle’s surroundings. The Multi-Terrain Monitor displays underfloor, front, side, and rear-view camera images on the 14-inch display, assisting the driver in assessing road conditions, blind spots, and distances to obstacles.

Striking Exterior Design: Ruggedness Meets Refinement

The 2025 GX 550 presents a distinctly aggressive exterior design that embodies its robust and capable nature. Lexus designers focused on expressing the inherent off-road functionality of a true body-on-frame SUV. Their vision was to create a GX that seamlessly blends a tough exterior with a luxurious and modern interior, reflecting the refined outdoor experiences enjoyed by GX owners.

The 2025 GX features a square-body profile with a horizontal design language, conveying a sense of stability and strength. The front fascia evolves the Lexus spindle body concept with a bold and resolute design that also enhances off-road functionality. To achieve a grounded and stable stance, designers sculpted a taut body with a wide track and pronounced fender flares, visually pulling the front pillar base rearward. Standard Triple-Beam LED headlamps and the grille opening are strategically positioned to minimize potential road impact. LED fog and cornering lamps are available for enhanced visibility in challenging conditions. The seamless integration of the grille and headlamps creates a powerful and unified front presence.

From the side, the GX projects a solid and powerful silhouette with a horizontally flowing body line. The rear showcases a square and aggressive stance, highlighted by the signature unified L-shaped light bar. The rear LEXUS logo is a continuation of the Next Chapter design introduced on the 2022 NX. The GX also features a standard power rear lift door with a convenient pop-out window and an available kick sensor for hands-free operation.

The 2025 GX offers a range of exterior color options depending on the grade, including Eminent White Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl, Atomic Silver, Incognito, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, and Nightfall Mica. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades are distinguished by exclusive bi-tone exterior color combinations, such as Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and Earth/Black Roof.

Luxurious Interior: Comfort and Technology Combined

The GX 550’s interior is designed to provide the duality expected of a luxury SUV – a rugged and capable exterior paired with a luxurious and inviting cabin. Regardless of the journey’s length, both driver and passengers will appreciate the modern and sophisticated interior environment. Adopting the driver-focused cockpit design seen in the RX and RZ models, the GX incorporates thoughtful elements that inspire driver confidence and focus.

A low, horizontal instrument panel flows seamlessly into the dash, creating a simplified and spacious experience for both driver and passenger, while also maximizing front and side visibility.
