Unlock Your Car’s Hidden Data with a 327 OBD2 Adapter and Torque Pro

For car enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike, understanding what’s happening under the hood is invaluable. Modern vehicles are packed with sensors constantly monitoring performance, but this data isn’t always readily accessible on your dashboard. If you’re looking to dive deeper into your car’s diagnostics and performance metrics without breaking the bank, a 327 Obd2 adapter combined with the Torque Pro app might be the perfect solution.

Like many, I always wanted more insight than my car’s standard display offered. Expensive scan tools exist, but as a budget-conscious individual, I sought a more affordable approach. I planned to use both my Android phone and a Nook tablet, and I knew that using a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter could sometimes interfere with my phone’s hands-free car system. This potential conflict made the Wi-Fi 327 OBD2 adapter a more versatile choice for my setup.

To interpret the data from the 327 OBD2 adapter, I needed a capable app. For this, I turned to the Torque Pro app, available on Google Play for around $5. It’s worth noting that Torque Pro is primarily designed for Android devices and may not be available for Apple iOS users. This powerful app acts as the interface to translate the raw data from the 327 OBD2 adapter into understandable gauges and readouts.

For a dedicated display, I repurposed an old 7-inch Barnes & Noble Nook Color tablet that was no longer in regular use. To run Android apps like Torque Pro on the Nook Color, I installed “AndroidForNook,” a readily available software option that cost around $20. This clever solution allows the Nook to dual-boot, giving the option to switch between the original Nook software and the Android operating system required for Torque Pro.

The 7-inch screen of the Nook Color proved to be an excellent size for a custom car dashboard. Within the Torque Pro app, I configured a layout that allowed me to display 17 different gauges simultaneously. This wealth of information, all updating in near real-time (within seconds), provided a comprehensive overview of my vehicle’s operation.

Many of the default sensors and displays are readily available within Torque Pro itself. For more vehicle-specific parameters, like those relevant to my C-Max, I explored online forums and communities dedicated to OBD2 and Torque Pro. These resources are invaluable for discovering custom PIDs (Parameter IDs) and sensor configurations that unlock even more data specific to your car model. I am still in the process of fine-tuning some custom PIDs for my vehicle. For example, the “HV Amps” display in the top row initially showed some inaccuracies during charging or regeneration, displaying incorrect information. However, the “HV Amps” gauge in the middle row seemed to provide more reliable readings, even showing negative values during regenerative braking, though further testing is needed to confirm its absolute accuracy. I’m even considering adjusting the equation by adding a (*-1) to refine the readings.

The displayed data in the image was captured while the car was parked with the internal combustion engine (ICE) running. “SoC” refers to the State of Charge of the lithium-ion battery in my hybrid vehicle. Some parameters, like “Absolute Load” and “Load,” are still under investigation for their exact interpretation in my specific context. “Cat B1S1” indicates the temperature of the catalytic converter. Moving forward, I plan to utilize the “Timing Adv”ance gauge to compare the engine performance when using regular versus premium gasoline, hoping to gain insights into fuel efficiency and performance differences.
