Toyota unveiled a captivating concept vehicle at the 2024 SEMA Show, the 4runner Trd Surf Concept, a vibrant homage to Southern California’s iconic surf culture and the adventurous spirit of the original 4Runner. Born from the Toyota Motorsports Garage, this concept seamlessly blends the open-air freedom of the first-generation 4Runner with the advanced technology and design of the all-new 2025 model, creating a unique tribute to a lifestyle synonymous with sun, sand, and surf.
The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept immediately evokes memories of the 1980s, a golden era when the Toyota 4Runner became an integral part of the Southern California beach scene. Surfers, in pursuit of the perfect wave, relied on the 4Runner’s rugged capability and versatility. Marty Schwerter, the lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center, drew upon his personal experiences cruising the Pacific Coast Highway in a Toyota mini pickup to shape the vision for this concept. He recognized the echoes of the first generation in the 2025 4Runner and envisioned a concept that would encapsulate the essence of those carefree, sun-drenched days.
“The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser,” Schwerter explained. “We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable top was a must, just like the original, and we made sure it’s as functional as it is stylish.”
The foundation of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is the all-new 2025 4Runner TRD Limited. Under the hood lies the iForce 2.4L turbocharged engine, producing a robust 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission. A full-time four-wheel drive system, managed by an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case, ensures power is readily available for any terrain. A custom exhaust system enhances the factory powertrain with a more pronounced and satisfying sound.
Schwerter’s team immediately focused on transforming this already capable 4Runner into the quintessential beach vehicle. However, the process of creating a “factory-like” 4Runner TRD Surf that maintains both aesthetic appeal and performance with and without the roof presented significant engineering challenges.
“Engineering a legitimate, removable top; going from a 4-door to a 2-door while maintaining functional windows; flipping the front passenger seat for improved rear seat access; and adding 2-inches of width to both sides were all just tip of the iceberg issues,” Schwerter noted. “What makes this build so stellar has less to do with the changes themselves and more to do with the amazing way that they all work together—the result is truly greater than the sum of the parts.”
The removable top transformation was approached with meticulous planning and execution. To gain practical insights, the team conducted a trial run on a GEN5 4Runner. When the actual work commenced, several days were dedicated to precise alignment. The removable top itself was fabricated in-house, combining traditional techniques with CAD and modern 3D printing technology to achieve cutlines that perfectly mirrored both sides of the body, ensuring a flawless fit. Designed for easy removal by a single person, this key feature provides the sought-after open-air experience that is deeply associated with the 4Runner legacy, making the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept a true embodiment of freedom.
Reflecting its rugged yet stylish nature, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept boasts a long-travel suspension system featuring billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms. This advanced system is engineered to tackle challenging terrains while maintaining a smooth and comfortable ride. Steering enhancements, custom front axles, and a Toyota Tundra rear-end housing complement the bespoke suspension setup. At each corner, substantial 37-inch tires are mounted on 17×8.5-inch custom wheels, completing the concept’s powerful and muscular stance, ready for any beach adventure.
Prepared for any adventure, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept features a weatherproofed interior, including soft, waterproof flooring. A particularly thoughtful touch is the front passenger seat that flips forward, providing effortless access to the rear seating area, ideal for surfers loading gear or passengers getting in and out with boards. Accessories include a custom surfboard “Travel Quiver,” specifically designed for this concept, which integrates seamlessly with the roof rack, reinforcing the vehicle’s surf-inspired theme and practicality.
The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is also a testament to the collaborative spirit within Toyota. Bringing together diverse departments such as TRD North Carolina, TMNA Production Engineering, Service Parts and Accessory Development (SPAD), AAP, and Motorsports and Engagement Marketing, the project highlights the collective expertise and passion within the company.
“This vehicle not only showcases Toyota’s engineering prowess; it also reflects the passion and creativity of our team members who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries. And besides, who doesn’t love a concept dedicated to surfing!?” commented Mike Tripp, group vice president, Toyota Marketing.
The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept was showcased at the 2024 SEMA Show from November 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the Toyota booth (Central Hall, Booth 22200). Attendees had the opportunity to experience this innovative concept firsthand and witness how Toyota continues to celebrate its heritage while embracing the future of automotive adventure with vehicles like the 4Runner TRD Surf.
