Porsche 911 Classic: Reviving the Golden Era of Automotive Design

Porsche has unveiled a stunning tribute to its heritage with the new 911 Sport Classic, a limited-edition model that encapsulates the iconic style of the 1960s and early 1970s. Drawing inspiration from the original 911 and the legendary 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7, this modern classic is limited to just 1,250 examples, each meticulously crafted by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. This release follows the successful 997-based 911 Sport Classic from 2009, further cementing Porsche’s commitment to blending its rich history with contemporary automotive excellence.

Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualization and Classic at Porsche, emphasizes the emotional resonance of these heritage models. “The Heritage Design models represent the most emotionally driven concepts of the Porsche product strategy,” he stated. “This unique approach sees the Style Porsche design department working with Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur to reinterpret iconic 911 models and equipment from the 1950s through to the 1980s and to revive design features from those decades.” This new 911 Sport Classic is part of Porsche’s plan to release four limited-edition heritage models, with the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, launched in 2020, being the first in this series, embodying design elements from the 1950s and 1960s.

This exclusive model isn’t just about aesthetics; Porsche Design has also crafted a bespoke chronograph for owners of this collector’s item. This timepiece mirrors design elements from the 911 Sport Classic, creating a seamless ownership experience. Furthermore, the Heritage Design Classic package extends the classic feel to the interior of most current 911 models, allowing a broader audience to appreciate these heritage touches.

Distinctive Design Elements of the 911 Classic

The 911 Sport Classic immediately stands out with its wide body, typically reserved for the 911 Turbo models, giving it a powerful stance and road presence. Adding to its unique character is the fixed rear spoiler, reminiscent of the iconic ‘ducktail’ from the Carrera RS 2.7, and the double-bubble roof, further emphasizing its distinctiveness as a true 911 Classic.

The color palette of the 911 Sport Classic further enhances its vintage appeal. Mirroring the first 997-generation 911 Sport Classic and the early Porsche 356, the exclusive Sport Grey Metallic paint finish makes its debut on this model. Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, describes the color choice: “The new 911 Sport Classic is the first vehicle to feature Sport Grey Metallic paintwork,” he explains. “Grey is never boring, quite often a statement and always cool.” Beyond the signature Sport Grey Metallic, the 911 Sport Classic is also available in solid Black, Agategreymetallic, Gentian Blue Metallic, and Paint to Sample options. Adding a sporty visual touch are twin stripes in light Sports Grey running over the bonnet, roof, and rear spoiler.

Inside the cabin, the iconic Pepita pattern adorns the door panels and seat centers, creating a distinctive retro ambiance. Two-tone, semi-aniline leather upholstery in Black/Classic Cognac provides a sophisticated contrast with the exterior paint, completing the heritage-inspired interior.

Power and Performance: The Most Potent Manual 911

The 911 Sport Classic is not just about looks; it delivers a unique driving experience. Its powertrain features a 3.7-liter, twin-turbo flat-six engine producing a robust 405 kW (550 PS), delivered exclusively to the rear wheels. Paired with a seven-speed manual gearbox, this configuration makes the new 911 Sport Classic the most powerful manual 911 currently available.

The manual gearbox incorporates an auto-blip function, ensuring smooth downshifts by automatically adjusting engine speed to match gear ratios. The standard sports exhaust system is specifically tuned for this model, providing an even more engaging and emotive sound experience, enhancing the connection between driver and machine in this exceptional 911 classic.

The suspension system, derived from the 911 Turbo and 911 GTS models, is engineered to meet high performance demands. Standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) allows the shock absorbers to react instantly to changing driving dynamics. PASM is combined with a sports suspension as standard, lowering the ride height by 10 millimeters, further enhancing both the aesthetics and handling prowess of this remarkable 911 classic.

Availability: The 911 Sport Classic is scheduled for release in European Porsche Centres starting from July 2022, with availability in additional markets to follow. The Heritage Design Classic package is expected from September 2022, and Paint to Sample options from October 2022.
