Porsche 911 Sport Classic: A Limited-Edition Homage to Heritage

Porsche has unveiled the new 911 Sport Classic, a limited-edition model reviving the iconic style of the 1960s and early 1970s. With only 1,250 units being produced by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, this car is a direct successor to the 997-based 911 Sport Classic from 2009 and draws heavily on the design language of the original 911 (1964-1973) and the legendary 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualization and Classic at Porsche, highlights the emotional core of these models: “The Heritage Design models represent the most emotionally driven concepts of the Porsche product strategy. This unique approach sees the Style Porsche design department working with Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur to reinterpret iconic 911 models and equipment from the 1950s through to the 1980s and to revive design features from those decades.” The 911 Sport Classic is the second of four planned limited-edition Heritage Design models, following the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition launched in 2020, which took inspiration from the 1950s and 1960s.

Adding to the exclusivity, Porsche Design has created a bespoke chronograph for owners of the 911 Sport Classic. This timepiece mirrors design elements of the car itself, creating a cohesive collector’s experience. Furthermore, the Heritage Design Classic package extends the vintage feel to current 911 models, offering selected interior elements inspired by the Sport Classic.

The 911 Sport Classic’s visual distinctiveness is immediately apparent. It boasts a wide body, typically reserved for the 911 Turbo models, combined with a fixed rear spoiler reminiscent of the iconic ‘ducktail’ from the Carrera RS 2.7. The double-bubble roof further accentuates its unique silhouette, setting it apart within the 911 range.

Paying tribute to the first 997-generation 911 Sport Classic, the designers chose Fashion Grey as inspiration for the exclusive Sport Grey Metallic paint finish. Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, explains the significance of the color: “The new 911 Sport Classic is the first vehicle to feature Sport Grey Metallic paintwork. Grey is never boring, quite often a statement and always cool.” Beyond the signature Sport Grey Metallic, the 911 Sport Classic is also available in solid Black, Agategrey metallic, Gentian Blue Metallic, or Paint to Sample, offering a degree of personalization. Adding to the sporty aesthetic are twin stripes in light Sports Grey running over the bonnet, roof, and rear spoiler.

Inside the 911 Sport Classic, the heritage theme continues with the classic Pepita pattern adorning the door panels and seat centers. Two-tone, semi-aniline leather upholstery in Black/Classic Cognac creates a sophisticated contrast with the exterior paint, further enhancing the vintage-inspired luxury.

The Most Powerful Manual 911 Available Today

The powertrain of the 911 Sport Classic is as unique as its design. A 3.7-litre, twin-turbo flat-six engine delivers a potent 405 kW (550 PS) to the rear wheels. Crucially for purists, this power is managed through a seven-speed manual gearbox, making the new 911 Sport Classic the most powerful manual 911 currently available.

The manual gearbox features an auto-blip function, ensuring smooth downshifts by automatically rev-matching engine speeds between gears. Complementing the powerful engine is a standard sports exhaust system, specifically tuned for this model to provide a more emotive and engaging sound experience. The suspension, derived from the 911 Turbo and 911 GTS, is engineered for high performance. Standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) allows the shock absorbers to react swiftly to changing driving dynamics. PASM is paired with a sports suspension as standard, lowering the ride height by 10 millimeters for a more focused driving experience.

Availability: The Porsche 911 Sport Classic is slated for release in European Porsche Centres starting in July 2022, with other markets to follow. Selected options, such as the Heritage Design Classic Package and Paint to Sample, will become available later in the year.
