Audi Q7 2017: Why One Owner Traded German Luxury for a BMW X5

As an automotive enthusiast and former owner of not one, but two 2018 Audi Q7 Prestige models, I felt compelled to share my experiences, especially for those considering the Audi Q7 2017 or similar models. My journey led me away from Audi and into a BMW X5, a decision driven by several key factors that potential buyers should be aware of.

While the Audi Q7, including the Audi Q7 2017, is undeniably a well-finished vehicle and a comfortable highway cruiser, my ownership experience was marred by frustrations that ultimately led me to switch brands. One of the most significant issues, particularly relevant to older models like the Audi Q7 2017 and 2018, was the reliance on Google Earth Virtual Cockpit overlay, a feature that has since become defunct. However, beyond this now-expired technology, my concerns ran deeper, touching upon fundamental aspects of the driving and ownership experience.

My primary deal-breaker with Audi, which remains a concern even in later models, was the almost exclusive adoption of touchscreens for vital driving controls. For me, physical buttons and dials offer a more intuitive and safer way to interact with vehicle functions while driving. Coupled with this interface challenge, I consistently experienced frustrating throttle lag in my Q7s. This delay in responsiveness, a common complaint among Audi owners and discussed extensively in online forums, detracts significantly from the driving pleasure. While the exact cause remains undefined, many speculate the DC transmission to be a contributing factor.

Software glitches were another persistent annoyance. Random malfunctions and inconsistencies plagued the system, adding to a sense of unreliability. Perhaps most concerning was the perceived “laissez-faire” attitude from Audi regarding addressing these issues. This corporate stance, while possibly dealership-dependent, contributed to a feeling of dissatisfaction and ultimately pushed me towards exploring alternatives.

Switching to a BMW X5 proved to be a revelation. The difference in driving experience and technology was, in my opinion, transformative. The X5 exhibits superior responsiveness, a quieter cabin (thanks to features like acoustic glass, readily available in US models), and a voice recognition system that rivals even “Alexa” in its capabilities. For Amazon subscribers, this seamless integration is a notable advantage. Furthermore, the Head-Up Display (HUD) and driver assistance features in the BMW X5 surpassed anything I encountered in my Audi Q7s, including the Audi Q7 2017 and 2018 models. Navigation in the X5 is also significantly more responsive and accurate. In contrast, my Audi Q7 often struggled to initiate navigation promptly and frequently misinterpreting voice commands or failing to find locations effectively.

To be clear, this isn’t intended as blind brand loyalty. Newer BMW X5 models have also faced their share of initial production issues. However, in a direct comparison for daily driving, the X5 simply provided a more satisfying and technologically advanced experience.

Beyond technology and driving dynamics, certain ergonomic choices in Audi vehicles, including the Audi Q7 2017 and subsequent models, also contributed to my dissatisfaction. The placement of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) controls on the steering column rather than the steering wheel felt less intuitive. Similarly, positioning basic climate controls, such as temperature adjustments, near knee level seemed ergonomically questionable.

Finally, the perceived condescending attitude from Volkswagen Automotive Group (VAG), Audi’s parent company, towards customers was a significant factor. While dealership experiences can vary, the general sentiment of “you bought it, be happy” resonated with my experience and seemed to be a widely acknowledged issue among Audi owners.

While the Audi Q7 2017 and similar models offer undeniable strengths in terms of interior finish and highway comfort, potential buyers should carefully consider the technological and driving experience aspects. For me, the BMW X5 ultimately delivered a more responsive, technologically advanced, and ultimately more enjoyable ownership experience. While personal preferences vary, my experience highlights key areas where the BMW X5 surpassed the Audi Q7, leading to a complete shift in brand loyalty.
