Seeking AWD Sienna Owner Experiences in Snowy Conditions

Hello everyone,

A long-time Toyota enthusiast here, currently driving my second 4Runner – a fantastic vehicle even at 15 years old. However, as it ages, I’m starting to consider a replacement while it still holds value. Living in northern New England, the 4×4 capability is essential for navigating snowy roads for a significant part of the year. My driving is primarily on-road, not off-roading.

Previously, I owned a 2008 RAV4 Limited, which was badged as AWD. Yet, during my time with it, the AWD system never seemed to engage. Despite attempts in snowy, icy parking lots to induce wheel slip and activate the AWD, it remained inactive. Multiple dealer and independent garage inspections confirmed the AWD system was functioning “as expected,” but in real-world winter driving, it felt purely like a FWD vehicle. This experience led me back to a 4Runner.

Now, considering the need for more cargo space, the Toyota Sienna minivan has emerged as a potential option. I’ve noted the availability of an Awd Sienna model. However, my past experience with the RAV4’s AWD system raises concerns. Information available suggests the Sienna’s AWD operates similarly – engaging automatically when deemed necessary. While I have strong brand loyalty to Toyota, my past AWD experience makes me skeptical about the real-world effectiveness of their AWD systems, fearing it might be more of a marketing feature than a practical benefit.

Therefore, I am reaching out to AWD Sienna owners who reside in regions with substantial winter weather. Could you share your experiences with the AWD Sienna in snowy and icy conditions? Your insights would be incredibly valuable and greatly appreciated as I evaluate whether an AWD Sienna is a suitable choice for my needs.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kind regards,
