But how many of these claims actually hold true? For the average buyer, determining the best choice without extensive testing can be challenging. That’s where expert reviews and data-driven analysis become invaluable. We focus on rigorous, scientific testing of electric scooters, evaluating manufacturer promises, and sharing unbiased results. Our aim isn’t to highlight the most extravagant scooters, but rather to identify the truly best performers in the budget category.
2024 Budget Scooter Trends
This year, notable trends are shaping the budget electric scooter landscape. One significant development is the expansion of warranty coverage. Brands like NIU and GOTRAX are now offering comprehensive two-year warranties on their scooters, including one year of coverage for the battery and motor. VMAX also provides a limited two-year warranty, while other brands such as Hover-1 and TurboAnt typically offer shorter limited warranties of one year or even six months.

Another key trend is a heightened emphasis on reliability. An increasing number of brands are producing budget e-scooters designed to be durable and dependable for several years of commuting. To help consumers assess reliability, we’ve introduced a reliability score for every electric scooter we review this year. This score, on a scale of 1 to 10, considers 11 different factors, including warranty duration, tire and battery specifications, and water resistance.
IP ratings and UL certifications are also gaining importance among consumers. These certifications provide clear indicators of an electric scooter’s protection against environmental factors like weather damage, as well as safety from overheating or fire risks. Consequently, we make sure to note these ratings, when available, for each electric scooter we evaluate. It’s particularly important to note that in cities like New York City, all personal electric vehicles must possess UL certification for legal purchase and operation.
