BMW is poised to redefine electric vehicle range with its upcoming iX3 Neue Klasse, promising to exceed 700 kilometers (435 miles) on a single charge. This announcement arrives hot on the heels of the updated BMW iX entering production, which currently holds the crown as the longest-range BMW EV, boasting up to 701 kilometers (436 miles) under WLTP testing. However, this reign is set to be short-lived as the new iX3, built upon the revolutionary Neue Klasse platform, is slated to take over before the year concludes, establishing a new benchmark in electric SUV efficiency.
During the recent announcement detailing the start of production for the 2026 BMW iX facelift, details emerged confirming that the first Neue Klasse model will surpass even the impressive range of the updated iX. The second-generation iX3, anticipated to debut this fall, is engineered to alleviate range anxiety, a primary concern for many prospective EV buyers. While the current BMW iX already offers a commendable range, exceeding many gasoline-powered vehicles, particularly in its size and vehicle class, the Neue Klasse iX3 is designed to push these boundaries even further. This enhanced range is crucial as the charging infrastructure continues to develop, promising increased convenience and usability for electric vehicle owners.

As exclusively reported by BMWBLOG, the entire lineup of Neue Klasse EVs is designed to deliver a minimum range of 600 kilometers (373 miles), with some models reaching an impressive 900 kilometers (559 miles). This leap in range is primarily attributed to the adoption of BMW’s next-generation Gen6 batteries, featuring round cells. These advanced batteries offer a significant 20% increase in energy density compared to the prismatic Gen5 batteries currently utilized in BMW’s electric lineup.
Beyond battery technology, BMW is focusing on holistic vehicle efficiency improvements for the Neue Klasse. The new electric motors will see a 10% reduction in weight, contributing to overall vehicle efficiency. Combined with other advancements, these enhancements are projected to boost vehicle efficiency by 20% compared to current BMW EV models. Furthermore, the Neue Klasse architecture will incorporate 800V technology, enabling ultra-fast DC charging capabilities ranging from 260 kW to 400 kW. BMW has publicly stated its commitment to achieving 30% faster charging times and a 30% increase in range for vehicles built on the Neue Klasse platform, marking a significant step forward in EV technology.

The all-new BMW iX3 Neue Klasse, set to commence production later this year in Debrecen, Hungary, will spearhead this technological revolution. While it remains unspecified which particular iX3 variant will achieve the coveted 700+ kilometer range, speculation suggests it is unlikely to be the high-performance M60 xDrive model. Instead, the focus for extended range is anticipated to be on models such as the rumored iX3 40, 40 xDrive, or 50 xDrive. Logically, the rear-wheel-drive configuration is expected to be the most efficient, maximizing range. However, BMW may also strategically equip larger battery packs in the xDrive all-wheel-drive versions to cater to different consumer needs and preferences.
Looking ahead, the upcoming BMW i3 sedan, scheduled for production in Munich starting next year, is projected to be even more efficient than the iX3 Neue Klasse. Leveraging a potentially lower curb weight and a more aerodynamic sedan body style, the i3 sedan is expected to surpass the iX3’s range, assuming it utilizes similar battery pack configurations. The Bmw Neue Klasse platform is therefore not only about groundbreaking range for SUVs like the iX3 but also about setting new efficiency standards across various vehicle segments in BMW’s electric future.
