2024 BMW 5 Series Touring: The Ultimate Station Wagon Redefined

The BMW 5 Series Touring has long been synonymous with driving pleasure, sporty sophistication, and practical functionality in the premium mid-size segment. Now, the sixth generation marks a significant leap forward, embracing digital innovation, advanced automated driving and parking systems, and a strong commitment to sustainability. For the first time, this iconic model is available with a fully electric powertrain in the form of the BMW i5 Touring, making the 2024 BMW station wagon a truly versatile and forward-thinking vehicle. This new iteration is engineered to excel as a sophisticated all-rounder, perfectly suited for both daily commutes and long journeys, offering a compelling blend of style, sportiness, adaptability, and spacious comfort.

BMW’s innovative flexible drive architecture allows for the production of various model types – petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric – on a single production line at their Dingolfing plant. The initial launch is set for May 2024 in Germany, several European countries, and Japan, with a broader global rollout to follow in June 2024.

Exterior Design: Bold Proportions and Modern Aesthetics

The new BMW 5 Series Touring showcases dynamically stretched proportions and expansive surfaces that define its striking exterior. Compared to its predecessor, the 2024 BMW station wagon has grown in all dimensions, measuring 97mm longer (5,060mm), 32mm wider (1,900mm), and 17mm taller (1,515mm). It also boasts the longest wheelbase in its class, extended by 20mm to 2,995mm, enhancing both its stance and interior space.

The front of the vehicle is particularly distinctive, featuring a modern take on the classic BMW twin headlights and kidney grille. Vertically oriented LED elements serve as both directional indicators and daytime running lights, creating a signature light design. The forward-projecting BMW kidney grille can be optionally enhanced with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, adding an extra touch of visual appeal. From the side, the sleek window lines and elongated roof spoiler accentuate the wagon’s sporty and elegant two-box silhouette. The powerfully sculpted rear wheel arches and flat rear window emphasize the vehicle’s wide and planted stance. L-shaped chrome trim elegantly divides the LED rear light elements, which wrap around into the side panels.

BMW offers a range of paint finishes, including three exclusive BMW Individual options. Standard equipment includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels, with electric and plug-in hybrid models featuring 19-inch wheels. Optional alloy wheels up to 21 inches are also available. For those seeking a more dynamic appearance, the M Sport Package, M Sport Package Pro, and M Carbon Exterior Package options further enhance the sporty character of this 2024 BMW station wagon. The top-of-the-line BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring comes standard with unique exterior components that clearly signal its exceptional performance capabilities.

The cabin’s modern premium ambiance is further enhanced by newly designed sports seats as standard, a steering wheel with a flattened lower section, and the optional BMW Interaction Bar.

Demonstrating BMW’s commitment to sustainability, the new 5 Series Touring features a completely vegan interior as standard. The Veganza upholstery is also available with optional decorative perforations. Further upscale options include BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in various bi-color designs, a panoramic glass roof, and the high-end Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with up to 18 speakers.

Functionality and Versatility: Optimized for Everyday Life and Travel

The 2024 BMW station wagon is engineered for practicality, offering increased space and significantly improved legroom, shoulder room, and elbow room, particularly for rear passengers, along with enhanced acoustic comfort. Its versatile interior and array of intelligent features make the new BMW 5 Series Touring equally adept at handling daily routines and longer journeys.

A wider and lower luggage compartment opening simplifies loading larger items. Regardless of the powertrain, all 2024 BMW 5 Series Touring models offer a generous luggage capacity, expandable from 570 liters to a maximum of 1,700 liters. Standard features include automatic tailgate operation and remote unlocking for the 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest from the luggage area. Under-floor storage provides dedicated space for the luggage compartment partition net, cover, and the charging cable in electric and plug-in hybrid models.

BMW i5 Touring: All-Electric Performance and Range
