Is the Buick Wagon Making a Comeback? Exploring the Appeal of the TourX

For a seasoned auto reviewer, the recent influx of crossovers and SUVs for testing purposes has been quite telling. While some, like the Volvo XC 40 Inscription, manage to impress, it’s hard to shake the underlying preference for wagons. There’s a fundamental truth for car enthusiasts: wagons often deliver a superior driving experience, better fuel efficiency, and a more practical use of interior space compared to their taller counterparts. Despite these advantages, the American market currently offers a limited selection of wagons, with only sixteen models available in early 2019.

Among these rare gems is the Buick TourX, a vehicle I had the pleasure of experiencing for a week. My test drive was centered around a round trip to Virginia, a journey of nearly 600 miles each way from just north of Detroit, to pick up a new Irish Wolfhound puppy. This extensive mileage provided ample opportunity to evaluate how this Buick Wagon performs on various terrains, from highways to back roads and city streets. In total, the Buick wagon and I covered approximately 1,600 miles in a single week, offering a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities.

The Buick Wagon’s Design and Appeal

Let’s be frank – the Buick wagon, specifically the TourX, possesses undeniable visual appeal. The rear three-quarter view is particularly striking, showcasing a fluid design that suggests motion even when stationary. The front end presents a sleek, aerodynamic profile imbued with character, a welcome departure from generic, bland designs. While the black accents around the wheel wells and lower sill might be a concession to the crossover-loving mainstream, they don’t detract significantly from the overall aesthetic of this stylish wagon.

Stepping inside the Buick wagon, the interior materials strike a balance between quality and practicality. It’s evident that the interior design leans towards a European sensibility, distinct from typical GM North American interiors. The materials are generally of good quality, with plastics primarily used in less frequently touched areas. The overall fit and finish of the interior contribute to a pleasant and well-executed cabin environment in this Buick wagon.

Driving Dynamics of the Buick Wagon

Spending countless miles on highways and toll roads is the ultimate test for any car’s driver’s seat. While the seat cushion in the Buick wagon could benefit from a touch more padding for extended journeys, it remained comfortable enough to avoid major complaints. Although not quite as plush as the seats in an Audi Q5, they are certainly not far behind in terms of comfort and support.

Perhaps due to an extended period driving crossovers, the Buick wagon creates a sensation of sitting surprisingly low, almost sports-car-like. While not as low as a Miata, the seating position is noticeably lower than a standard sedan, contributing to a more dynamically secure feel on the road. This lower center of gravity enhances the feeling of control, especially when compared to the top-heavy nature of many SUVs and crossovers. The Buick wagon offers a grounded and confident driving experience.

The interior controls of the Buick wagon are intuitively laid out and easily accessible. Navigating the features and controls doesn’t require extensive manual consultation. The infotainment system is standard GM fare, incorporating both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for seamless smartphone integration. The audio system delivers sound quality that is more than adequate for the intended audience of this Buick wagon.

Under the hood, the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine provides surprisingly robust power. A firm press of the accelerator yields swift acceleration from a standstill. The engine delivers 250 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm. While some enthusiasts might always crave more power, the output of the Buick wagon feels well-matched to its character. The eight-speed automatic gearbox handles power delivery smoothly and efficiently.

Fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. During my extensive test drive, which took place in late January with winter fuel and temperatures dipping into the low teens, the Buick wagon achieved just under 27 mpg. This real-world fuel consumption is commendable for a vehicle of this size and capability.

Practicality and Space of the Buick Wagon

One crucial aspect I evaluate in any vehicle with folding seats, particularly as a dog owner, is the flatness of the cargo floor. A flat floor is paramount for canine comfort during travel. The Buick wagon excels in this area, with rear seats that fold completely flat, creating a level cargo area. With the rear seats in their upright position, the cargo capacity is a generous 32.7 cubic feet, expanding to an impressive 73.5 cubic feet with the seats folded down. Our luggage and gear for the trip, along with a crate for the new puppy, were easily accommodated with room to spare in this spacious Buick wagon.

While I didn’t personally experience the rear seats as a passenger, my wife occupied them for a significant portion of the return journey with the puppy. She reported ample space and comfort. However, it’s worth noting that the rear seat area of this Buick wagon is equipped with only a 115v power outlet and lacks USB ports. This necessitated using a long cord to charge her phone in the back.

Buick Wagon vs. European Wagon Heritage

Does the Buick wagon deliver the same level of solidity and refinement on the road as my previous Mercedes-Benz E350 wagon? Not quite, but it comes remarkably close. The European tuning of the chassis and suspension is palpable, instilling a level of confidence on the road that surpasses expectations. Similar to my Mercedes, the Buick wagon feels planted and composed when tackling corners, off-ramps, or quick maneuvers. Body roll is present but controlled, contributing to a sense of partnership between driver and vehicle, rather than fighting against the laws of physics with excessive understeer.

Final Verdict: The Buick Wagon – A Smart Choice?

The base price for the Essence trim Buick TourX I tested was $35,070. With all available options included, the sticker price reached $42,200, which I consider a reasonable value proposition. In comparison, an Equinox I drove the previous year stickered at $40,000, and a Traverse reached $48,000, yet neither offered the interior refinement or driving quality of this Buick wagon.

Given the limited marketing investment from GM in the TourX, dealerships are offering substantial discounts. It’s not unusual to find incentives of around $10,000, potentially allowing buyers to acquire a fully loaded, top-tier trim Buick wagon for between $30,000 and $32,000. In today’s automotive market, this represents exceptional value.

Talk us out of adding another wagon to the family

Even at its full sticker price, the Buick TourX is a recommendable vehicle. However, with the available discounts, it becomes an almost irresistible proposition. If you’re considering a crossover, perhaps it’s time to give this Buick wagon a serious look. Not only does it offer a more engaging driving experience, but in a market saturated with crossovers, choosing a wagon like the Buick TourX allows you to stand out as a discerning individual who appreciates driving dynamics and practicality in a stylish package.
