Modern vehicles are rolling computers. They boast sophisticated infotainment systems, large displays, and a network of interconnected functionalities. Part of this technological advancement often includes something you might not expect: a curl installation. Curl, a versatile command-line tool for transferring data with URLs, is frequently integrated into automotive software, including platforms like GenIVI and Tizen, and various other independent software setups within cars.
For many, including myself, the widespread use of curl in vehicles remains largely unseen in daily life. While the sheer number of new curl installations is exciting, the companies implementing it rarely reach out. Curl has matured into a remarkably stable piece of software, meaning direct feedback or issue reports from these automotive integrations are infrequent. When they do occur, the source and specific application are often undisclosed.

However, there’s an intriguing side effect. The inclusion of the curl license text within car systems, accessible through “about” sections or open-source license listings, inadvertently leads end-users to my email address. In many cases, it seems my address is among the few, if not the only, contact points readily available.
This accessibility sometimes results in desperate users reaching out to me when they encounter car issues. Having exhausted other avenues to resolve their problems, they see my email within their car’s system and assume I can provide assistance.
Here are a few examples of support requests I’ve received from car owners:

Navigating Misdirected Support Requests
Regrettably, my capacity to respond to these inquiries is limited, and often, non-existent. I am unable to provide assistance with car-specific issues. Over time, I’ve learned that explaining my lack of connection to the car manufacturer or their products can be a lengthy and energy-consuming process, often outweighing the potential benefit. It is my hope that these individuals eventually find solutions to their problems through more appropriate channels.
It’s important to clarify that sharing these experiences is not a complaint. These situations are more of an interesting observation of the unexpected consequences of including open-source licenses in consumer products. In fact, I find these emails somewhat fascinating and even endearing. They offer a unique glimpse into the real-world experiences of everyday users interacting with technology, even when those interactions take an unexpected turn.
