Toyota Announces Recall for 2022 Corolla Cross Over Potential Airbag Issue

Toyota has issued a safety recall impacting certain 2022-2023 model year Corolla Cross vehicles in the United States. The recall, announced on December 20, 2023, affects approximately 12,600 vehicles.

This recall stems from a potential issue with the front passenger airbag deployment. The vehicles were previously inspected under a prior recall, but Toyota has identified a problem with the initial inspection process. This means that some vehicles that require repair may not have been correctly identified. Specifically, a manufacturing error in the instrument panel, where the airbag is located, could prevent the airbag from deploying as designed in a crash. This noncompliance with federal safety requirements increases the risk of injury to the front passenger in the event of an accident.

To address this, Toyota dealers will conduct a new, more effective re-inspection on all involved vehicles. If the inspection reveals an issue, dealers will replace the instrument panel at no cost to vehicle owners. Owners of affected Corolla 2022 and 2023 models will be notified by Toyota in mid-February 2024. Until the vehicle has been re-inspected and, if necessary, repaired, Toyota advises that no one should sit in the front passenger seat of vehicles included in this recall.

Vehicle owners can check if their Corolla 2022 or 2023 Corolla Cross is involved in this safety recall by visiting Toyota.com/recall or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at nhtsa.gov/recalls. By entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information on these websites, owners can quickly determine their vehicle’s recall status. For further inquiries or assistance, owners can also contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center directly at 1-800-331-4331.
