G80 BMW M3 Competition: One Month Ownership Review

After a month behind the wheel of the G80 M3 Competition, it’s time to share some initial impressions. Having owned several BMW M models in the past, including E46 and E36 M3s, an F80 M3 Competition, and even a Porsche 991.2 911 GTS most recently, I came into this experience with a solid benchmark for sports and enthusiast cars. This review will highlight the pros and cons of the G80 M3 Competition as a daily driver and performance machine.

G80 BMW M3 Competition: The PROS

The G80 Bmw M3 Competition impresses in several key areas, making it a compelling package for daily driving and spirited runs.

Supreme Comfort and Daily Drivability

One of the first things that stands out is the exceptional comfort of the G80 M3. Getting in and out is effortless, and the driving experience is remarkably comfortable for a performance sedan. It’s a car that you can genuinely live with every day, without feeling fatigued or compromised.

Striking Aesthetics

The design of the G80 M3 is undeniably beautiful. The profile is sleek and aggressive, and while the front grille design was initially controversial, it has grown to be a defining and complementary feature of the car. It exudes a luxurious yet sporty presence.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The technology within the G80 M3 is a significant leap forward, particularly when compared to older generation sports cars. The larger iDrive screen is a welcome addition, offering a user-friendly interface and crisp visuals. The lighting options and overall system layout are well-integrated and intuitive. While there have been occasional minor glitches with the radio or screen responsiveness, these have been infrequent and easily manageable.

Mind-Blowing Power

The power of the G80 M3 Competition is simply phenomenal. Just when you think the engine has given its all, it unleashes another wave of acceleration. It’s an absolute beast on open roads and highways, offering relentless performance across the rev range.

Engaging Steering and Handling

For a car of its size and weight, the steering and handling of the G80 M3 are surprisingly impressive. While it may not match the surgical precision and feedback of a Porsche 911 GTS, it excels within its class. The steering provides a good sense of connection to the road, and the car handles corners with confidence. Concerns about numb steering or excessive understeer have not materialized in real-world driving, especially with performance tires like the Pilot 4S. It’s a remarkably agile and capable saloon.

Powerful Brakes

The brakes on the G80 M3 are exceptionally grippy and confidence-inspiring. BMW M brakes have always been known for their performance, but these feel a step above, providing immense stopping power when needed.

G80 BMW M3 Competition: The CONS

Despite its many strengths, the G80 BMW M3 Competition does have a few drawbacks.

Annoying Brake Squeal

The infamous brake squeal is a real issue. Despite attempts to bed in the brakes properly, the squealing noise, particularly at low speeds, persists. For a vehicle in this price range, it’s disappointing that BMW hasn’t addressed this issue with better materials. The brake squeal detracts from the otherwise premium feel of the car.

Fuel Consumption

While not as bad as some older V8 M3 models, the fuel economy of the G80 M3 Competition is not great. It is noticeably thirstier than a Porsche 911 GTS, requiring more frequent visits to the gas station. This is something to consider for those concerned about running costs.

Transmission Clunkiness at Low Speeds

The transmission, while quick and precise during spirited driving, can exhibit some clunkiness at low speeds. Jerky movements are sometimes noticeable when maneuvering in parking lots or in stop-and-go traffic. It’s not as smooth as a PDK in these situations, lacking some refinement in low-speed transitions.

Overall Ownership Score (After 1 Month)

Here’s a breakdown of scores on a 1-10 scale after one month of ownership:

  1. Power/Performance: 9
  2. Styling: 8
  3. Handling: 8
  4. Brakes: 7.5 (potential 9 without squeal)
  5. Comfort: 8.5
  6. Technology: 8
  7. Efficiency: 6.5
  8. Daily Driver-ability: 9
  9. Passenger Comfort: 9
  10. Smile Factor: 8.5

Overall 1-Month Score: 8.2

Conclusion

The G80 BMW M3 Competition is an outstanding car that delivers on multiple fronts. It excels as a daily driver, offering comfort, technology, and practicality, while also providing exhilarating performance when desired. While minor issues like brake squeal and low-speed transmission clunkiness exist, they are overshadowed by the car’s numerous strengths. Although it might not be quite as focused as a Porsche 911, the G80 M3 Competition is a fantastic all-around machine that brings a lot of joy to driving.
