GM Recalls Hundreds of Thousands of Trucks and SUVs Due to Potential Wheel Lock-Up

General Motors has announced a significant recall affecting nearly 462,000 of its pickup trucks and large SUVs. The recall addresses a critical safety concern where the rear wheels could potentially lock up unexpectedly, elevating the risk of accidents. This issue impacts a wide range of popular models from Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, spanning several model years.

Affected Models Across Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac Brands

The recall specifically targets several models across GM’s prominent brands. Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks manufactured between 2020 and 2022 are included. Similarly, GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks from the same model years are also affected. Beyond pickups, the recall extends to full-size SUVs, encompassing the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban models. This widespread recall indicates a potentially significant issue within GM’s vehicle lineup.

Understanding the Cause: Transmission Control Valve Wear

The root cause of this recall lies within the vehicles’ diesel engine transmissions. Documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that a transmission control valve component can experience wear and tear over time. In rare instances, this wear can lead to valve failure, which may then cause the rear wheels to lock up. Prior to a wheel lock-up incident, drivers might observe rough or unusual shifting patterns in the transmission, serving as a potential early warning sign.

GM’s Solution: Software Update and Warranty Coverage

To remedy this safety issue, GM dealers will implement a software update to the transmission control system. This updated software is designed to actively monitor the control valve for excessive wear. It’s engineered to detect potential issues approximately 10,000 miles before an actual wheel lock-up is likely to occur. If excessive wear is detected, the system will proactively limit the transmission to fifth gear. This preventative measure is crucial because wheel lock-up is triggered when the transmission downshifts from eighth gear. Furthermore, GM has committed to providing warranty coverage to address and repair transmissions exhibiting a defective control valve, ensuring owners are not burdened with repair costs related to this recall.

Recall Notification and Timeline of Issue Discovery

Vehicle owners affected by this recall will be officially notified by mail, with letters scheduled to be sent out starting December 9th. The documents also shed light on the timeline leading up to the recall. GM engaged in discussions with U.S. safety regulators regarding an owner complaint about this issue in January. Following this, an internal investigation was initiated by GM in July. By September, GM’s investigation had identified 1,888 reports potentially linking wheel lock-up to this condition. Additionally, the company found evidence of 11 incidents possibly related to the defect, including cases of vehicles veering off-road, some resulting in minor property damage. While three minor injuries were reported, GM clarified that these were not directly attributed to crashes.

This recall underscores GM’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and ensuring the well-being of its customers. Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to respond promptly to the recall notification and schedule a service appointment with their local GM dealer to have the necessary software update installed.
