The Dawn of a New Era: Mercedes-AMG’s All-Electric High Performance SUV

Mercedes-AMG is breaking new ground, forging its path into the electric vehicle landscape with a thrilling announcement. For the first time in its illustrious 57-year history, the performance powerhouse is developing a High Performance Suv entirely in-house. This groundbreaking vehicle, proudly “Born in Affalterbach,” will be the second to ride on AMG’s cutting-edge, proprietary AMG.EA electric high-performance platform. Excitement is already building as development vehicles are slated to begin their crucial first test drives this winter, signaling a significant step towards its market debut.

The legacy of high performance SUVs is deeply interwoven with AMG’s DNA. Over a quarter of a century ago, AMG, the performance and sports car division from Affalterbach, revolutionized the automotive world by pioneering this very segment with the iconic ML 55 AMG. This bold move resonated deeply with customers, and the high performance SUV category has experienced consistent and impressive growth ever since. Today, Mercedes-AMG’s SUV portfolio boasts an impressive six model lines, encompassing the AMG GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and the all-electric EQE SUV. Undeniably, the legendary Geländewagen Mercedes-AMG G 63 remains the jewel in the crown of their performance SUV lineage.

This latest SUV endeavor marks a pivotal moment for Mercedes-AMG. For the first time, they are taking complete control, designing the entire vehicle architecture from the ground up. This full-size SUV is not only a testament to their engineering prowess but also the second model to be built upon the revolutionary all-electric AMG.EA high performance platform. Furthermore, this project represents the sixth vehicle to be entirely conceived and developed by the dedicated performance specialists in Affalterbach. It joins an exclusive lineage that includes the first AMG.EA model currently undergoing rigorous testing, alongside legendary models such as the AMG GT, SL, previous generation GT, and the SLS.

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, emphasizes the significance of this new model: “SUVs have consistently ranked among our most sought-after models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are directly addressing this enduring trend, offering our discerning customers a truly captivating high performance off-roader built upon the advanced AMG.EA platform. Our innovative high performance architecture is guided by a clear and unwavering philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This means that these vehicles will not only excel as state-of-the-art electric vehicles but will also embody the quintessential AMG attributes of exhilarating emotion and unparalleled performance.”
