Honda Recalls Announced for Pilot, MDX, and TLX Models Due to ECU Software Issue

American Honda has issued a voluntary recall affecting approximately 295,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States. The recall addresses a potential issue stemming from improper programming of the fuel injection electronic control unit (FI-ECU) software. This programming error can trigger the check engine light to illuminate and, more significantly, may lead to engine performance problems.

Specifically, sudden throttle changes in affected vehicles might cause the engine to hesitate, stall, or lose drive power. These conditions understandably increase the risk of accidents or injuries. Honda has stated that they self-diagnosed the problem through their telematics monitoring systems, prompting the need for a software update to the supplier-provided part.

To remedy this issue, authorized Honda and Acura dealerships will perform a free software update to the FI-ECU. This service will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners. American Honda has confirmed that, thankfully, there have been no confirmed reports of crashes or injuries directly related to this software problem.

Owners of the following models are potentially affected by this Honda recall:

Honda Models:

  • 2023-2025 Honda Pilot

Acura Models:

  • 2022-2025 Acura MDX Type S
  • 2021-2025 Acura TLX Type S

Vehicle owners of these models are urged to check if their specific vehicle identification number (VIN) is included in the recall. Starting in March, registered owners will receive official notification by mail. However, owners do not need to wait for the mail notification. They can proactively check their recall status now by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or www.recalls.acura.com. For further assistance, owners can also call the Honda recall hotline at (888) 234-2138. Honda encourages all affected vehicle owners to schedule a service appointment at their earliest convenience to receive the free software update and ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of their vehicles.
