IMSA Inspired: The Audi RS6 GT – A Track-Ready Super Wagon

The Audi RS6 Avant has already cemented its status as a ridiculously fast and incredibly desirable car, but Audi has decided to push the boundaries even further. Enter the Audi RS6 Avant GT, a track-focused, limited edition model drawing inspiration from the legendary Audi 90 IMSA GTO. With only 660 units slated for global production and a mere 85 destined for the United States, getting behind the wheel of this wicked wagon is a privilege few will experience. I was fortunate enough to spend two hours piloting an RS6 GT prototype on the empty Streets of Willow at Willow Springs Raceway, an experience that undoubtedly ranks as a career highlight. This RS6 GT represents the swan song for the current RS6 Avant, and Audi has ensured it’s a truly memorable farewell.

Full disclosure: Audi provided track time at Willow Springs Raceway and the opportunity to test drive the RS6 GT alongside the iconic Audi 90 IMSA GTO and the RS6 Performance model.

While some performance enthusiasts might crave more power beyond the RS6 Performance’s already impressive 621 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, the RS6 GT largely maintains the same output. However, don’t mistake this for stagnation – the GT shaves a tenth of a second off the Performance model’s 0-60 mph sprint, achieving it in a blistering 3.3 seconds, according to Audi. This enhanced performance is partially thanks to a roughly 33-pound weight reduction in the US-spec RS6 GT compared to the RS6 Performance. This weight loss is primarily attributed to the switch to adjustable coilover suspension, massive carbon-ceramic brakes, and the GT’s lightweight carbon-fiber hood and front fenders. The coilover suspension also lowers the GT’s ride height by 0.4 inches compared to the air suspension found in the Performance model. Further distinguishing the GT, the transmission and differential tuning are more aggressively calibrated, though these subtle changes were barely noticeable from behind the wheel during track testing.

Track Performance and Handling

Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system continues to be a cornerstone of the RS6 GT’s driving dynamics, ensuring remarkable composure and inspiring driver confidence within just a few laps. Driving the GT back-to-back with an RS6 Performance immediately highlighted the advantages of the GT’s upgraded components: the coilover suspension, lower stance, and superior carbon-ceramic brakes.

On the track, the RS6 GT exhibits a more focused and planted feel compared to the RS6 Performance. The coilover suspension effectively minimizes body roll, while the ceramic brakes deliver consistent and fade-free stopping power, even under demanding track conditions. The RS6 GT is truly captivating when driven hard. Its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine unleashes a torrent of power, accompanied by an exhilarating exhaust note. The Quattro system provides exceptional grip and stability, while the advanced chassis technology ensures an engaging and rewarding driving experience. Despite its performance enhancements, it remains a substantial and weighty vehicle. Driving imprecisely can induce understeer, while skilled drivers can provoke oversteer when desired. The steering, while not exceptionally communicative, still provides adequate feedback, allowing the driver to discern the front wheels’ activity for confident cornering. The 8-speed automatic transmission generally performs admirably in selecting the appropriate gear. However, there were instances where a quicker downshift response would have been preferable, easily rectified using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual control.

Switching to the RS6 Performance after several sessions in the GT revealed distinct differences in driving character. The Performance exhibits more noticeable body roll, and its steel brakes lack the immediate bite and consistent performance of the GT’s ceramics. The bespoke Continental SportContact 7 tires, exclusive to the GT, were also missed, contributing to the enhanced grip and responsiveness of the track-focused model. However, the transmission and differential tuning felt largely identical between the two cars, providing rapid upshifts and allowing for some rear-end slip to maintain a lively feel in the corners.

Design and IMSA Inspiration

Aesthetically, the RS6 GT is undeniably striking. Beyond the unique graphics package and IMSA GTO-inspired design elements, the GT possesses an inherently aggressive stance. The substantial 22-inch six-spoke white wheels, reminiscent of the IMSA 90 GTO, tuck perfectly beneath the widened fenders, accentuated by the lowered ride height. New air vents positioned behind the front wheels add to the visual drama. The front fascia is dominated by Audi’s signature singleframe grille, while a subtle rear spoiler and a redesigned diffuser contribute to a tastefully modified rear profile. Every aspect of the RS6 GT’s appearance, from its menacing presence to its ground-hugging silhouette and historical graphics, embodies a unique brand of European cool that is distinctly Audi. While the RS6 Performance is already a visually appealing car, the RS6 GT’s distinctive styling elevates this station wagon to arguably the most captivating new car currently available.

Interior and Practicality

Inside, the RS6 GT maintains Audi’s hallmark blend of luxury and technology, offering all the expected creature comforts of a high-end vehicle. GT-specific enhancements include a numbered plaque on the center console denoting the car’s limited edition status, red seat belts and stitching, RS6 GT badging, and unique red carbon-fiber trim accents. Notably, the RS6 GT forgoes a sunroof, a feature some may appreciate for its potential weight reduction and increased headroom. Unfortunately, US-bound models will not offer the European-spec carbon bucket seats fitted to the test car. Despite this omission, the standard seats remain comfortable and supportive. Crucially, the RS6 GT retains the practicality of the standard RS6 Avant, offering reasonably spacious rear seats and a versatile trunk, making it the ideal choice for families with a need for speed and everyday usability.

Pricing and Final Verdict

The extent to which the RS6 GT’s engineering is directly influenced by the Audi 90 IMSA GTO beyond styling cues remains open to interpretation. However, Audi emphasizes that motorsport genuinely informs the development of their road car technology. My experience with the RS6 GT was limited to a smooth race track, precluding a comprehensive assessment of its daily driving comfort. However, even with the coilover suspension, it is unlikely to be overly harsh, and the air suspension can be reinstated as an option for those prioritizing ride comfort. US pricing is yet to be officially announced, but considering the RS6 Performance starts at $125,800, an estimated price closer to $175,000 for the RS6 GT seems reasonable. If budget allows and you possess a passion for driving, performance cars, and distinctive style, the Audi RS6 GT is an exceptional choice. Whether enjoyed on occasional track days or weekend drives, it’s an automotive experience unlikely to disappoint.
