Urgent Recall Alert: 2011 Kia Sorento SUVs at Risk of Engine Fires

Owners of 2011 Kia Sorento SUVs should take immediate notice: a significant recall has been issued due to a serious fire risk emanating from the engine compartment. Nearly 80,000 vehicles are affected by this recall, as announced by Kia and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall is crucial as it addresses a potential hazard that could put drivers and passengers in danger.

This recall centers around a specific engine type known as the Theta II, which has been identified as the source of the fire risk. This engine is the same type that has been implicated in previous fire incidents involving Kia vehicles, prompting investigations and concerns from safety authorities and consumers alike. Kia has acknowledged a history of issues with this engine, and this latest recall underscores the ongoing challenges associated with it. The NHTSA has been actively investigating Kia engine fires, and the Better Business Bureau has also been involved in arbitrating disputes related to these engine problems. Over the past decade, millions of Kia vehicles have been recalled due to fire-related issues, highlighting a persistent safety concern for the automaker.

To mitigate the risks associated with the Theta II engine, Kia has developed a software update called the “knock sensor detection system update,” or KSDS update. This software is designed to detect early signs of engine failure that could lead to fires. Vehicles included in this new recall have not yet received this crucial KSDS update, making the recall particularly urgent. Kia has stated that dealerships will install the KSDS update free of charge to owners. In cases where engine damage is detected, dealerships will also replace the engine at no cost to the owner. Furthermore, to provide additional peace of mind, Kia will extend the warranty coverage for engine repairs related to this recall for 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, after the software update is applied. Owners who have previously paid for repairs related to this issue before the recall announcement may be eligible for reimbursement from Kia.

Kia advises that before a fire occurs, drivers may notice warning signs such as the check engine light illuminating, smoke emanating from the engine area, or a burning smell. If you own a 2011 Kia Sorento, it is imperative to check if your vehicle is affected by this recall. You can easily check your vehicle’s recall status online through the NHTSA website using your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Do not delay in checking your vehicle’s status and contacting your local Kia dealership to schedule the necessary recall service to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road.
