BMW M5 Competition 2023: A POV Drive Review of the Bavarian Bruiser

“It’s still a BMW M5 Competition.” This phrase became a recurring thought throughout a week spent test-driving the 2023 BMW M5 Competition. Returning the keys to this performance sedan, the conviction in that mantra had solidified. Yet, moments of doubt did surface – whether admiring its presence in the driveway, appreciating the meticulously crafted interior, or pushing its limits on the road.

On paper, the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing boasts superior power figures, though dyno results might suggest otherwise. Visually, many would concede that the BMW M5 Competition presents a more refined cabin and a generally more upscale aesthetic. However, two key aspects tipped the scales, leading to a preference for the Blackwing: its exceptional Tremec 6-speed manual transmission and the remarkably compliant Magnetic Ride Control suspension.

The BMW’s ZF 8-speed automatic transmission is undeniably smooth, rapid, and intuitive. Still, the engagement of flicking plastic paddles falls short of the visceral satisfaction derived from operating a precise manual gearbox. While the M5 Competition offers ergonomic, heated, and massaging seats to mitigate discomfort, its ride quality remains noticeably firm and occasionally jarring.

In a head-to-head drag race, the M5 Competition’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system would likely outpace the rear-wheel-drive Blackwing. Navigating corners, a less experienced driver might find reassurance in the M5’s secure grip and predictable handling dynamics.

However, a seasoned professional driver could likely extract a faster lap time from the Blackwing. Even for an amateur enthusiast, the sheer exhilaration and raw engagement of the Blackwing can overshadow the M5’s arguably more “accessible” performance.

While the 2023 BMW M5 Competition presents numerous compelling reasons for ownership, the subjective driving experience ultimately led to a preference for a different kind of performance sedan. The choice, despite the M5’s merits, leans towards the unique character and driver engagement offered elsewhere.
