Mercedes SLR McLaren: The Ultimate Upgrade by McLaren Special Operations

Prior to the groundbreaking mid-engine MP4-12C in 2011, McLaren Automotive, in its nascent stages, turned its attention to refining its previous road-going masterpiece adorned with the prestigious “Speed Mark” badge: the Mercedes-Benz SLR. Responding to feedback from discerning Mercedes-Benz SLR owners, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) meticulously crafted an exclusive upgrade package. This wasn’t just a cosmetic refresh; it was a comprehensive overhaul designed to elevate the super GT’s handling and ride dynamics while injecting a dose of more assertive styling.

The transformation yielded impressive results. The Mercedes Slr Mclaren McLaren Edition saw a significant reduction in kerb weight, coupled with a 15 percent increase in downforce compared to the already sportier 722 Edition. These gains were achieved through a series of intelligent modifications. A new carbon-Kevlar front floor was implemented, alongside 722 GT race car-inspired front wheel arch vents. A redesigned rear diffuser and a larger air brake further contributed to the enhanced aerodynamics. Rounding out the performance enhancements was a lighter, ceramic-coated exhaust system, amplifying the thunderous声 of the supercharged 5.4-litre V-8 engine.

Beyond aerodynamics and weight reduction, the McLaren Edition package addressed the chassis dynamics. New springs and dampers were installed, and the ride height was subtly lowered by 10 millimeters. As a final visual flourish and a nod to McLaren’s identity, the intakes for the carbon fiber front bumper were restyled to echo the iconic McLaren logo. These changes, meticulously fine-tuned using a seven-post Formula 1 test rig, resulted in demonstrably improved road manners and handling precision for the Mercedes SLR McLaren.

The exclusivity of the Mercedes SLR McLaren McLaren Edition is undeniable. Only 25 examples received these ‘McLaren Edition’ enhancements, making it an even rarer sight than the barchetta-styled Stirling Moss edition, of which 75 were produced. This limited production run further cements the McLaren Edition’s status as a highly sought-after collector’s item.

The specific car highlighted here began its life as a standard SLR, originally finished in Crystal Galaxite Black Metallic with a Black and Anthracite Exclusive Leather interior. Delivered new to the UK and registered in December 2006, it underwent its transformation by McLaren Special Operations in late 2011. In addition to the comprehensive ‘McLaren Edition’ package, this particular car was further personalized with a carbon front splitter, mirrors, and kickplates, enhancing its visual appeal and exclusivity.

McLaren collaborated directly with the owner to create the unique Fire Black exterior hue – making this Mercedes SLR McLaren the only one in existence finished in this bespoke shade. To complement this distinctive aesthetic, black wheels from the 722 S roadster model were fitted. The cost for the ‘McLaren Edition’ upgrades alone amounted to a substantial £162,496, over and above the original purchase price of the Mercedes SLR McLaren, underscoring the bespoke and high-value nature of these enhancements.

Since June 2008, this exceptional Mercedes SLR McLaren has been meticulously serviced exclusively by Mercedes-Benz of Brooklands, with the most recent service completed in February 2024 at a cost of £4,378. Boasting a full and documented service history, complete with a stamped service book, this car is also offered with “The Owners’ Edition” coffee table book dedicated to the SLR, of which only 3,500 copies were ever printed, adding to its collectability.

With single ownership from new and showing just 23,746 miles at the time of its cataloging, this incredibly rare and significantly enhanced Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren represents a truly menacing and highly desirable addition to any discerning collection. Its blend of improved performance, unique styling, and unparalleled exclusivity makes it a standout example of automotive artistry and engineering prowess.
