Unleashing the Beast: The New Mustang GT500 CODE RED Breaks Cover

Inspired by passionate customer demand and a groundbreaking experimental build from 2008, Shelby American has unleashed the new Mustang GT500 CODE RED. This limited-edition marvel is engineered to be the ultimate expression of Shelby Mustang performance, taking the already formidable GT500 to unprecedented levels. The heart of the CODE RED is a hand-built, twin-turbocharged V8 engine, capable of delivering a staggering 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Beyond just raw power, each new Mustang GT500 CODE RED receives comprehensive upgrades to its suspension, cooling systems, and aesthetics, creating a truly holistic performance machine. Production is strictly limited to just 30 units, with only 10 being transformed from each of the 2020-2022 GT500 model years, making this an exceptionally rare and desirable piece of automotive history.

From Experimental Dream to Production Reality: The CODE RED Legacy

For the first time in Shelby’s illustrious history, an experimental vehicle is transitioning into a limited production run. Shelby’s “EXP” cars are legendary, pushing boundaries and exploring the limits of performance. Icons like the Green Hornet, Little Red, and the original 2008 twin-turbo CODE RED paved the way for innovation. The ’67 GT500 Super Snake, with its 427 race engine, and the Green Hornet, a ’68 hardtop testing fuel injection and independent rear suspension, exemplify this experimental spirit. Similarly, the 1967 Little Red boasted twin superchargers and numerous other pioneering features.

In 2008, Shelby American dared to replace the supercharger on a GT500 with twin turbos, creating the experimental CODE RED Shelby GT500. This radical transformation saw Nelson Racing Engines re-engineer the 5.4-liter V8, incorporating a dual-feed fuel system that could introduce high-octane racing fuel as needed. To manage the immense heat generated, Shelby significantly enhanced the cooling system and collaborated with AMS to develop a speed-sensitive boost controller. The drivetrain underwent substantial revisions, and numerous performance enhancements were implemented. However, the sheer cost and extreme nature of this original CODE RED meant it remained an experimental dream, not feasible for production – until now.

The 2020-2022 Mustang GT500 CODE RED: Redefining Performance

For the production-ready 2020-2022 CODE RED, Shelby meticulously collaborated with key partners to forge a robust, potent, and dependable performance package. The 5.2L engine has been extensively upgraded with all-new high-performance internal components, force-fed by a cutting-edge, intercooled premium twin-turbo system. A completely new fuel system and engine management system are also integral to this transformation. The result is breathtaking: the new Mustang GT500 CODE RED delivers over 1,000 horsepower and 780 lb-ft of torque on readily available 93 octane pump gas. When fueled with E85 Ethanol, this beast truly awakens, unleashing its full potential of up to 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

However, the current generation GT500 CODE RED is far more than just a powertrain upgrade. It’s a comprehensive transformation. The car features a striking widebody package, accommodating new, wider wheels and tires. Axles and suspension tuning are also upgraded to handle the immense power. The interior receives bespoke enhancements, and unique CODE RED badging distinguishes it. A lightweight carbon fiber hood further enhances both performance and aesthetics.

Each new Mustang GT500 Code Red owner will receive a membership to Team Shelby, the global club founded by Carroll Shelby in 2008, fostering a community of passionate enthusiasts. Furthermore, each car will be meticulously documented in the official Shelby Registry, cementing its place in Shelby American history. The transformation package starts at an MSRP of $224,995, and this is in addition to the cost of the base car. Production is now underway in Las Vegas, and owners of 2020-2022 model year Shelby GT500s are invited to contact Shelby American to explore transforming their own vehicles into a CODE RED edition, joining an elite group experiencing the pinnacle of Mustang performance.
