Mustang Mach-E: Conquer Commutes and Road Trips with Confidence

The adaptive cruise control on the Mustang Mach-E is a standout feature. During extensive highway driving, it proved to be exceptionally intuitive and easy to use, particularly the thumb switches on the steering wheel which made adjusting the following distance effortless. This, combined with the convenience of one-pedal driving, transformed the Mach-E into a surprisingly relaxing and user-friendly vehicle, especially in typical stop-and-go traffic. It’s clear the Mustang Mach-E is ideally suited as a daily commuter.

To further test the practicality of the Mustang Mach-E, a trip to our Exclusive Resorts homes in Tahoe was planned. This 200-mile journey each way presented a perfect opportunity to evaluate the real-world usability of the EV charging infrastructure. Without home or destination charging available, relying solely on public charging networks would be essential for this electric Mustang adventure. While the Mach-E includes a portable Ford Mobile Charger compatible with standard 120-volt outlets, its slow charging rate of approximately 3 miles per hour renders it impractical for this type of trip. Therefore, DC Fast Charging stations along the route were identified as the only viable solution.

Fortunately, Northern California boasts a rapidly expanding and well-established EV charging network, largely thanks to providers like EVgo, Chargepoint, and Electrify America. Finding these charging points is straightforward using the FordPass App, which effectively eliminates concerns about range anxiety. Prior to the Tahoe trip, an initial charging session at a local EVgo station at Whole Foods in Mill Valley presented a minor connection issue requiring a quick call to EVgo support. The issue was swiftly resolved, and a complimentary charge was provided. Generally, the charging process is user-friendly. Drivers can utilize the FordPass App or dedicated apps from providers like EVgo, Chargepoint, and Electrify America to locate nearby charging stations, check real-time charger availability, and navigate to the chosen location. These charging stations are often conveniently situated in shopping centers or hotel parking areas. A typical DC fast charging session of 20 to 40 minutes can replenish the battery to approximately 60-80% capacity. It’s worth noting that charging speeds decrease as the battery approaches full capacity, and achieving a complete 100% charge can take up to a couple of hours. Consequently, longer road trips in the Mustang Mach-E require a bit more forethought, allowing for 20-30 minute stops to recharge and aligning break times with charging needs.
