Unleashed Power: The New GT500 Code Red – A Limited Edition Shelby Mustang

Shelby American has once again pushed the boundaries of performance with the introduction of the New Gt500 Code Red. Inspired by a 2008 experimental build and fueled by customer demand for extreme performance, this limited-edition Mustang is engineered to be the ultimate expression of Shelby performance. The GT500 Code Red takes the already formidable GT500 to unparalleled levels, boasting a hand-built twin-turbocharged V8 engine capable of delivering up to an astounding 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Beyond its dramatically enhanced powertrain, each new GT500 Code Red benefits from comprehensive upgrades to its suspension, cooling systems, and aesthetics, ensuring a holistic performance transformation. Production of this exclusive model is strictly limited to just 30 units, with only 10 GT500s from each of the 2020-2022 production years being selected for this remarkable conversion.

This marks a significant moment in Shelby’s history as the Code Red is the first experimental car to transition into a limited production vehicle. Shelby’s legacy is rich with iconic “EXP” experimental cars, including the Green Hornet, Little Red, and the original 2008 twin-turbo Code Red. These experimental vehicles have long served as testbeds for innovation. For example, the ’67 GT500 Super Snake featured a potent 427 race engine, while the Green Hornet, a ’68 hardtop, was instrumental in testing fuel injection and independent rear suspension technologies. The 1967 Little Red was notable for its twin superchargers and numerous other pioneering features. These predecessors paved the way for the current new GT500 Code Red.

The lineage of the Code Red can be traced back to 2008 when Shelby American experimented with replacing the supercharger on a GT500 with twin turbos. This experimental 2008 Code Red Shelby GT500 featured a 5.4-liter V8, re-engineered by Nelson Racing Engines, incorporating a dual-feed fuel system that could introduce high-octane racing fuel as needed. Enhanced cooling systems were implemented to manage the increased thermal load, and AMS collaborated to develop a speed-sensitive boost controller. Extensive modifications were made to the drivetrain and numerous performance enhancements were integrated. However, due to its extreme nature and elevated cost, the original Code Red remained an experimental marvel, not feasible for series production.

However, with the new GT500 Code Red, Shelby has successfully translated this experimental concept into a production reality for the 2020-2022 GT500 models. Working in close collaboration with key partners, Shelby has developed a package that is not only immensely powerful but also robust and reliable. The upgraded 5.2L engine now features cutting-edge high-performance components, augmented by a premium intercooled twin-turbo system, a completely redesigned fuel system, and an advanced engine management system. On standard 93 octane pump gas, the new GT500 Code Red delivers over 1,000 horsepower and 780 lb-ft of torque. When fueled with E85 Ethanol, this output escalates dramatically to a staggering 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

The transformation of the new GT500 into the Code Red edition goes far beyond just engine upgrades. The package includes a widebody conversion, complemented by new wheels, tires, axles, and meticulously tuned suspension. The interior receives bespoke enhancements, along with unique badging and a lightweight carbon fiber hood, further setting it apart. Each owner of a Shelby GT500 Code Red will also receive a membership to Team Shelby, the global club founded by Carroll Shelby in 2008, and their vehicle will be officially documented in the Shelby Registry, adding to its exclusivity and collectibility. The package MSRP begins at $224,995, which excludes the cost of the base car. Production is currently underway in Las Vegas, and owners of 2020-2022 Shelby GT500 model year cars are invited to contact Shelby American to explore transforming their existing vehicles into the breathtaking new GT500 Code Red.
