The New Toyota Land Cruiser: Heritage Reborn for the 2024 Model Year

Toyota’s iconic Land Cruiser, a nameplate synonymous with durability and off-road prowess, is making a triumphant return to the North American market after a three-year absence. Staying true to its legendary heritage, the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser arrives as a rugged and capable off-roader, now more accessible to a wider range of adventurers with a starting MSRP in the mid-$50,000 range. This highly anticipated comeback model exclusively features the powerful i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, including an available 12.3-inch touchscreen with the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system and Multi Terrain Monitor, the new Land Cruiser blends classic off-road capability with modern innovation. For enthusiasts seeking exclusivity, a First Edition grade, limited to just 5,000 units for North America, boasts unique heritage LED headlamps, a roof rack, rock rails, and a distinctive interior design. Furthermore, peace of mind comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 on all models, reinforcing Toyota’s commitment to safety and reliability.

Legends truly never die, and the Toyota Land Cruiser is a testament to that. This off-road icon, Toyota’s longest-running nameplate, is back in North America for the 2024 model year, reconnecting with its robust and adventurous roots. Since its US debut in 1958, the Land Cruiser has consistently evolved, from the iconic two-door 40 Series models, celebrated for their fold-down windshields and jump seats, to the highly capable and luxurious 200 Series, the last generation sold in the States, which masterfully combined Land Cruiser’s legendary strength with premium features. Now, the Land Cruiser embraces its foundational principles, returning as a high-caliber off-road vehicle at a more attainable price, poised to empower a broader spectrum of customers to embark on unforgettable backcountry journeys across the globe.

Constructed on the robust TNGA-F global truck platform, the new Land Cruiser is meticulously engineered and rigorously tested to conquer the most demanding environments. This generation of the Land Cruiser exclusively offers the top-tier i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, generating an impressive 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Slightly more compact and leaner than the previous 200 Series, the new Land Cruiser exhibits enhanced agility on trails. It also incorporates advanced off-road technologies initially introduced on Toyota’s latest truck models. Initially limited to 5,000 units during the first two months of production, the Land Cruiser will feature a special First Edition grade, showcasing distinctive two-tone paint options and enhanced off-road equipment.

Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, emphasizes the Land Cruiser’s significance: “This icon belongs in our lineup. For 2024, Land Cruiser returns to its origin with a heritage-inspired design paired with the legendary capability and durability Land Cruiser is known for. It will take even more customers on adventures across the globe, just as it has done for generations.”

The 2024 Land Cruiser will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan and is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. in the spring of 2024. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is anticipated to begin in the mid-$50,000 range, with the official announcement expected closer to the on-sale date.

A Return to Core Values: Land Cruiser’s Heritage

For decades, the Land Cruiser has cemented its reputation for world-class capability, embodying Toyota’s core values of quality, durability, and unwavering reliability. Upon its initial arrival in the U.S. in the late 1950s, Toyota sold a mere single unit in its first year. However, the introduction of the 40 Series marked a turning point, propelling the Land Cruiser to become Toyota’s best-selling model in the U.S. for five consecutive years. These early Land Cruisers were characterized by solid front and rear axles with leaf springs and a distinctive boxy silhouette featuring a flat roof, minimal overhangs, and iconic “TOYOTA” grilles. As customer demands evolved, desiring larger 4×4 vehicles, the Land Cruiser expanded into larger station wagon models, such as the 55 and 60 Series. This progression ultimately culminated in the 200 Series, a premium, full-size luxury off-road SUV, which represented the Land Cruiser’s direction before its hiatus in the U.S. market.

Now, marking its return to the U.S. market after a three-year break, the new Land Cruiser leverages the global TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. This advanced ladder frame construction provides enhanced chassis rigidity compared to the 200 Series, achieved through the utilization of high-strength steel with strategic blanking and laser welds. Notably, the 2024 Land Cruiser is 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than the outgoing 200 Series, contributing to improved maneuverability and off-road prowess.

Toyota’s North American-based studio, CALTY Design Research, collaborated closely with the global development team to shape the design ethos of the new Land Cruiser. The design process was guided by four core principles: authenticity, reliability, timelessness, and professionalism. The result is an all-new Land Cruiser that embodies a pure expression of form harmonizing with function.

To capture the signature Land Cruiser aesthetic, the 1958 grade proudly features iconic round LED headlights and a heritage “TOYOTA” grille. In contrast, the Land Cruiser grades are upgraded with sleek, rectangular headlights reminiscent of the FJ62. The squared body profile pays homage to classic Land Cruisers, while the A-pillar is strategically pushed back, enhancing both the visual appeal and forward visibility on challenging trails. The front overhang is also reduced, improving the approach angle for demanding off-road situations.

The new Land Cruiser boasts a newly engineered double-wishbone front suspension with twin-tube shocks, paired with a multi-link rear suspension featuring coil springs. Electric power steering is implemented to enhance steering feel and facilitate the integration of advanced safety and convenience technologies. All models are equipped with 17-inch disc brakes on both front and rear wheels. With a standard trailer hitch across all grades, the Land Cruiser offers a substantial towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds.

Standard i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain: Power and Efficiency

The 2024 Land Cruiser introduces the advanced i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain as standard across all grades. This innovative system combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor seamlessly integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Power is drawn from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a combined system output of 326 horsepower and a robust 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy estimates will be released closer to the Land Cruiser’s official on-sale date.

Every Land Cruiser model is equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, featuring a center locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD). An electronic locking rear differential, standard on all Land Cruisers, enhances traction on challenging terrain by enabling a 50/50 power split to the rear wheels.

An Off-Road Icon Reimagined: Capability and Technology

The Land Cruiser has long been celebrated as an off-road icon, and this new generation elevates its legacy. An all-new front stabilizer bar disconnect system is standard on the Land Cruiser and First Edition grades, providing increased wheel articulation at the touch of a button. Overall, the Land Cruiser boasts an approach angle of up to 31.0 degrees, a maximum departure angle of 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle reaching 25.0 degrees. Ground clearance is up to 8.7 inches. For enhanced off-road protection, customers can opt for rock rails and full-coverage high-strength steel skid plates. Front tow/recovery hooks are standard for off-road recovery situations. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade comes standard with fog lamps for improved visibility, while the Land Cruiser grade receives upgraded color-selectable RIGID fog lamps.

Multi-Terrain Select, now functional in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, is standard on the Land Cruiser grade. This system offers adjustable settings to optimize wheel spin control across diverse terrains, including Mud, Dirt, and Sand. CRAWL Control, also standard, functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering while the system maintains a chosen speed from five selectable options. Downhill Assist Control is another standard off-road feature, aiding drivers in navigating steep descents by regulating vehicle speed. Drivers can monitor potential trail obstacles using the Multi-Terrain Monitor, which displays crisp visuals on the available 12.3-inch touchscreen, standard on the Land Cruiser grade.

With Toyota Genuine Accessories and Associated Accessory Products (AAP), the Land Cruiser offers extensive customization possibilities. The AAP ecosystem is continuously expanding and currently includes over 100 accessories, such as off-road recovery gear, rack attachment brackets for storage, and carriers for outdoor sporting equipment. These accessories can be conveniently incorporated into customer’s monthly payments, simplifying Land Cruiser customization through Toyota.

The Land Cruiser comfortably seats up to five passengers. Land Cruiser 1958 models feature black fabric seats and an 8.0-inch touchscreen equipped with Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This advanced multimedia system provides access to a wide array of enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. The Land Cruiser grade offers heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats in black or Java, along with a larger 12.3-inch multimedia monitor and an available 14-speaker JBL premium sound system. The Land Cruiser grade also offers optional 4G connectivity for up to five devices, transforming the vehicle into an AT&T Hotspot. An available premium package for the Land Cruiser Grade includes luxurious leather-trimmed seats. The limited First Edition grade exclusively features leather-trimmed seats with a distinctive “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels. A standard Qi wireless charging pad provides enhanced power output, and dual USB-C charging ports are included in the front row, with availability for rear passengers. Functional enhancements for off-road driving include a palm rest for touchscreen interaction and side knee pads for added stability.

A Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key integrates with compatible smartphones, enabling vehicle entry, tailgate access, and vehicle starting (dependent on 4G network availability). The Digital Key can be remotely shared, offering greater control over vehicle access without the need for physical keys.

Simplified Grade Structure: 1958, Land Cruiser, and First Edition

The 2024 Land Cruiser will be available in three distinct grades: the Land Cruiser 1958, the Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition. An optional premium package enhances the Land Cruiser grade with features like power heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, head-up display, digital rearview mirror, and moonroof.

The 2024 Land Cruiser offers a palette of seven exterior color choices: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior colors are complemented by a Grayscape roof.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0: Standard Safety and Convenience

Every 2024 Land Cruiser model comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), Toyota’s comprehensive suite of active safety and convenience systems. Enhanced system sensors with improved detection capabilities power the TSS advancements. This suite includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist, when conditions are met, utilizes the vehicle’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks such as maintaining distance from preceding vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists. Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different scenarios.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 features enhanced functionalities:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection now features enhanced detection capabilities due to new system sensors, including improved intersection support and motorcycle detection, in addition to pedestrian and bicyclist detection.
  • Lane Departure Alert now incorporates Steering Assist and enhanced lane recognition, detecting certain 3D objects like guardrails to help define lane boundaries.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control now offers Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting. Enhanced vehicle detection allows for the detection of multiple preceding vehicles and vehicles in adjacent lanes, resulting in smoother speed adjustments, especially during lane changes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist, new to Land Cruiser and requiring Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled, utilizes detectable lane markings for lane centering and provides more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes through minor steering adjustments.
  • Emergency Driving Stop System, a new function of Lane Tracing Assist, monitors driver input to detect inattentiveness or non-responsiveness, such as during a medical emergency, and is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn’t respond to alerts.
  • Road Sign Assist, also new to Land Cruiser, detects speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, displaying an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, standard safety features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), along with Hill Start Assist Control (HAC).

Beyond Zero Vision: A Step Towards Carbon Neutrality

Reflecting Toyota’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future through a diverse approach, the Land Cruiser is the latest hybrid offering in Toyota’s lineup to bear the Beyond Zero badge. Toyota currently offers 16 electrified vehicles, including twelve hybrid models, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle, and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai, providing customers with unparalleled choices to reduce their carbon footprint.

Limited Warranty and ToyotaCare

The 2024 Land Cruiser is backed by Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty, covering all components except normal wear and maintenance items. Additional warranties include a 60-month/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and a 60-month warranty against corrosion perforation with no mileage limitation. Hybrid-related components are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles, and the hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles, transferable across ownership.

The 2024 Land Cruiser also includes ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, and 2 years, unlimited mileage of Roadside Assistance.
