Enhanced Power, Torque, and Acceleration Dynamics

The second-generation NSX drivetrain, a fusion of a high-output twin-turbo V6 and the torque-vectoring Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® three-motor hybrid system, has been a benchmark of innovation since its inception in 2016. Elevated further in the new NSX Type S, it achieves the highest combined output of any road-going Acura powertrain, delivering 600 horsepower and 492 lb.-ft. of torque.

Hand-assembled at the Anna Engine Plant in Ohio, the supercar’s bespoke twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter 75-degree V6 engine receives significant upgrades, including new fuel injectors with a 25% higher flow rate, new intercoolers capable of dissipating 15% more heat, and turbochargers shared with the NSX GT3 Evo, boosting peak pressure by 5.6% (from 15.2 to 16.1 psi). These enhancements result in an engine output increase from 500 hp to 520 hp and torque from 406 lb.-ft. to 443 lb.-ft.

The gear ratio for the Twin Motor Unit (TMU), which powers the front wheels and provides active torque vectoring during cornering, has been lowered to 10.382:1 from 8.050:1. This 20% reduction in ratio amplifies off-the-line torque, endowing the NSX Type S with formidable launch capabilities.

Furthermore, the supercar’s Intelligent Power Unit (IPU), which supplies power to the electric motors, operates with enhanced efficiency. This translates to a 20% increase in usable battery capacity and a 10% boost in battery output. The increased capacity and output allowed engineers to refine the electric motors within the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system for enhanced performance across all four Integrated Dynamics System modes, while also extending the EV range.

Advanced 9-Speed DCT Transmission

The NSX Type S channels its power through a recalibrated 9-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), engineered for even greater performance responsiveness. Key improvements include an all-new Rapid Downshift Mode, more aggressive automatic downshifting, quicker upshifts in Sport and Sport+ modes, and an elevated rev threshold for downshifts in Track mode.

The new Rapid Downshift Mode, available in Sport mode and above, allows drivers to execute multi-gear downshifts by simply holding down the downshift paddle. Holding the paddle for 0.6 seconds prompts the transmission to automatically select the lowest possible gear for the vehicle’s speed, minimizing shift time and enabling quicker throttle application.

Upshifting via paddles in Sport and Sport+ modes has been optimized with new programming that engages the clutch up to 50% faster from paddle activation, enhancing acceleration.

In Sport+ mode, without paddle input, the transmission now downshifts almost instantaneously upon brake application, such as when approaching a corner. This proactive gear selection maintains stability during braking in a straight line and primes the NSX for rapid corner exits by optimizing engine speed.

Transmission behavior in Track mode has also been refined, allowing the NSX Type S to downshift earlier due to a 1,500 rpm increase in the rev threshold. This empowers NSX Type S drivers to engage the downshift paddle sooner during deceleration.

Optimized Handling, Ride Comfort, and Responsiveness

Acura engineers have meticulously fine-tuned the chassis, suspension, and overall responsiveness of the NSX Type S, enhancing both its performance and the driver’s emotional connection to the vehicle. The four modes within the Integrated Dynamics System have been recalibrated to boost performance, and the Intake Sound Control (ISC) and Active Sound Control (ASC) systems have been reprogrammed for a more integrated and evocative engine note. The result is a unique supercar experience that harmonizes world-class handling and exhilarating power with an engaging driving experience suitable for daily use.

Integrated Dynamic System Modes:

Quiet Mode: Quiet mode leverages the increased battery capacity and output, along with the new lower TMU gearing, for sharper acceleration from a standstill. The enhanced output and capacity also extend the NSX Type S’s pure electric driving range, even with more assertive accelerator inputs. Furthermore, the ISC is programmed to minimize engine sound in Quiet mode.

Sport Mode: Sport mode now features the Rapid Downshift function, alongside updated calibrations for the suspension dampers and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD®. The new suspension settings reduce body roll and brake dive, resulting in more stable turn-ins. The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system actively vectors torque to generate a yaw moment, providing the NSX Type S with a sportier and more responsive steering feel. Corner exits are enhanced by TMU assistance, delivering additional torque for a direct and effortless sensation with less accelerator pedal input.

Sport+ Mode: Designed for spirited driving on winding roads, Sport+ mode has been reprogrammed to foster a stronger driver-vehicle connection. This includes earlier downshifting when the transmission is in fully automatic mode. The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® is optimized to improve turn-in by using torque vectoring to create an even more aggressive steering response for a given steering angle. During corner exits, the TMU provides additional assistance, stabilizing the car while enhancing acceleration. Gear upshifts in Sport+ mode are also up to 50% faster, minimizing shift intervals and improving acceleration.

Track Mode: Track mode is optimized to harness the full performance and grip potential of the NSX Type S. When downshifting into 2nd through 7th gears, the allowable downshift speed has been increased by 1,500 rpm, granting drivers greater control over power delivery and keeping the engine within its peak power band in track conditions. Additionally, in Track Mode, the ISC and ASC sound profiles are optimized to provide clearer audible cues for ideal shift points.

New Forged Wheels and Wider Track

The NSX Type S features new performance forged alloy split-five spoke wheels, available in Matte Shark Grey or Gloss Berlina Black. Their increased negative offset widens the front and rear track by 0.4 inches and 0.8 inches, respectively. This wider stance not only improves handling but also gives the supercar a more commanding presence.

Brembo® High-Performance Braking System

The 2022 NSX Type S comes standard with six-piston front and four-piston Brembo® brakes with red calipers. Upgrading to the Lightweight Package introduces Carbon Ceramic Brembo brakes (available with Black, Silver, Red, or Orange calipers), further reducing curb weight by approximately 58 lbs.

Bespoke Pirelli P-Zero Tires

Pirelli has developed new P-Zero tires exclusively for the NSX Type S, utilizing advanced modeling technology derived from years of motorsports experience. Sized 245/35ZR19 at the front and 305/30ZR20 at the rear, these tires feature an asymmetric tread pattern for exceptional steering precision, rear stability, and high grip in both wet and dry conditions. Ultra-High-Performance tread compounds ensure outstanding handling and braking performance. Coupled with the widened front and rear track, these new tires contribute to a 6% increase in lateral grip.

Each Pirelli P Zero tire designed for the 2022 NSX Type S bears the “H0” marking on the sidewall, signifying its bespoke development in collaboration with Acura to optimize the supercar’s performance.

Race-Inspired Design and Aerodynamics

The NSX Type S exhibits a dramatic and aggressive new design, rooted in the core principles of Total Airflow Management that have guided NSX design from its inception. The redesigned front fascia, featuring larger and more angular air intakes, and the enlarged rear diffuser work synergistically to enhance high-speed stability. The new carbon fiber front spoiler shape minimizes front aerodynamic lift by directing airflow beneath the car.

To facilitate cooling for the more powerful engine, a larger front grille opening allows increased airflow to the radiators. Four additional openings, two on each side, channel air to sub-radiators behind each front bumper corner. The outermost air intakes also direct air to the sides of the car, collaborating with the redesigned front corners to create an air curtain. This reduces wake along the car’s sides, improving airflow to the side-mounted air intakes for the intercoolers.

Air exiting the rear of the car is managed by a new, larger carbon fiber diffuser, modeled after the unit used on the NSX GT3 Evo race car. Shaped for rapid airflow through the center section, the diffuser generates downforce. Additional fins mitigate wake effects from the tires during cornering, which could otherwise reduce downforce during critical maneuvers. The diffuser’s shape also shifts the negative pressure peak position rearward, contributing to a balanced downforce effect.

Exclusive Design Elements

Authentic materials are prevalent throughout the NSX Type S, including carbon fiber for the front lower spoiler, side sills, rear decklid spoiler, and the new diffuser. A standard carbon fiber roof not only enhances the design but also lowers the supercar’s center of gravity by reducing weight higher up in the vehicle. The mesh in each front air intake, previously resin, is now crafted from steel.

Gloss Berlina Black exterior mirrors, door handles, a dark exhaust finisher, and, for the first time, Acura badges front and rear are standard. Dark-tinted headlight and taillight lenses, along with a distinctive red engine cover, further amplify the aggressive aesthetic. “Type S” decals adorn the rear quarter panels, and each NSX Type S features a special numbered plaque mounted on the engine cowling.

For enhanced performance and a more personalized appearance, buyers can opt for the Lightweight Package, which adds a high-gloss carbon fiber engine cover and carbon ceramic brakes. Inside, the Lightweight Package includes carbon fiber accents on the steering wheel and meter hood. Combined, the Lightweight Package reduces curb weight by 57.8 pounds (26.2 kg).

New Gotham Gray Finish

Available in a palette of 10 colors, the 2022 NSX Type S marks the debut of an exclusive matte paint finish for an Acura product in North America. The Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, employs a five-layer painting process, applying individual coats to panels before assembly, allowing each coat to fully cure.

For the particularly sinister Gotham Gray finish, a clear matte metallic coat is applied as the fifth layer, replacing the standard glossy clear coat. Production of this finish is limited to just 70 of the 350 NSX Type S models.

This exclusive matte metallic finish necessitates new handling and shipping protocols at the PMC to ensure complete protection during transportation. This includes a new protective film applied to the car and a thicker, softer body covering for transport. Acura dealers will also receive special training to instruct owners on the proper care of the paint to maintain the matte finish’s pristine condition.

Enhanced Driver-Focused Cabin

Inspired by the original NSX, the second-generation NSX interior is ergonomically designed and driver-centric, further refined in the NSX Type S. New additions include an Alcantara® headliner, an embroidered Type S logo on the glove compartment, and embossed NSX logos on the headrests. The NSX Type S logo is also featured on the key fob.

Additional interior details include contrast stitching and three available Alcantara® and Semi-Aniline Leather combinations: Ebony, Orchid, and Red. Full Semi-Aniline Leather seats in Ebony or Red are also optional.
