Pontiac aimed to amplify the sales success of the G6 by introducing the G6 GXP coupe show car at the New York International Auto Show. Building upon the G6’s inherent sleek design, the GXP variant was conceived to project a more assertive and dynamic presence. This concept car served as a gauge for public and media sentiment, crucial for evaluating the feasibility of production for a Pontiac G6 Gxp model.
Dennis Maraone, Pontiac product director, emphasized the cautious yet optimistic approach, stating, “While the GXP performance series has historically resonated well, extending it to our highest volume vehicle necessitates careful consideration to ensure its proper execution.” He further added, “We are optimistic that the comprehensive enhancements encompassing exterior aesthetics, interior refinement, and performance upgrades embodied in the G6 GXP show car will captivate enthusiasts of the 2+2 coupe configuration.”
The exterior transformation of the GXP model is immediately striking, headlined by a redesigned front fascia. This aggressive new face incorporates an integrated lower air dam and a bold chrome treatment applied to Pontiac’s signature twin-port grille. Adding to its muscular stance is a twin air scoop hood. The rear fascia received equal attention, showcasing dual chrome-tipped exhausts and a distinctive “hammerhead” spoiler, further amplifying the sporty appeal of this Pontiac G6 GXP. Sculpted side rocker panels contribute to a lower, ground-hugging aesthetic, complemented by substantial 19-inch wheels and vented cross-drilled brake rotors. A 25-mm reduction in suspension height completes the visual package, reinforcing the performance-oriented character of the G6 GXP.
Inside the Pontiac G6 GXP, red accents inject a sporty ambiance, a departure from the standard G6 interior. Red chrome trim adorns the instrument cluster, center stack, and door controls, harmonizing with the red leather seat and door panel inserts. This bold color palette elevates the cabin’s sporty feel, aligning with the GXP’s performance intent.
Performance enhancements are central to the Pontiac G6 GXP concept. It features a modified 3.9-liter V-6 engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission for engaging driving dynamics. Engine output is boosted to 270 horsepower (202 kw) and 259 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm) through the integration of a ram air induction system with a K&N air filter and a cat-back free-flowing exhaust system. These modifications underscore the GXP’s commitment to enhanced performance.
The GXP performance lineage began in 2003 with the Bonneville GXP, followed by the Grand Prix GXP in 2005, which currently accounts for a significant 30 percent of Grand Prix retail sales. The Solstice GXP was also slated for launch that fall, further expanding the GXP series. The unveiling of the Pontiac G6 GXP concept represented a strategic move by Pontiac to potentially extend the appeal of its performance-oriented GXP sub-brand to a broader audience through its popular G6 model line.
