The Porsche Speedster, a name synonymous with open-top exhilaration and sporting pedigree, first graced the automotive world in 1954 as a 1955 model. This iconic roadster was essentially the brainchild of Max Hoffman, a highly influential New York-based importer of foreign cars. Hoffman envisioned a car that could capture the burgeoning American sports car market, and the Speedster delivered in spades, proving its mettle both in showrooms and on racetracks. Born from the Porsche Cabriolet, the Speedster was intentionally minimalist. It shed almost all non-essential features to achieve an attractive base price of under $3,000 in New York. Even the heating system was considered an optional luxury. Weather protection was basic, provided by removable side curtains and a simple folding top, underscoring its focus on driving purity.

The beauty of the Speedster lay in its dual personality. It served admirably as everyday transportation, yet with minimal preparation, it transformed into a competitive racer. Owners would simply apply masking tape to the headlight covers, affix racing numbers, and head to the local circuit. The Porsche Speedster quickly became the car to beat in the under-2-liter class of American amateur racing, establishing a formidable reputation for Porsche in motorsport early on. The nimble handling and responsive engine of the Speedster, particularly when equipped with the enhanced Porsche 1600 Super engine, made it a true driver’s car.
The example we are highlighting, chassis number 82942, offers a glimpse into the desirable specifications from the era. Originally finished in the elegant Aquamarine Blue with a Beige leatherette interior, this particular Speedster was factory-equipped with the sought-after 1600 Super engine, along with practical sealed-beam headlights and US-spec bumpers. Its production date of January 28, 1957, and distribution through Max Hoffman’s dealership in New York further solidify its provenance and desirability.

This Speedster eventually found its way to the West Coast, where it was acquired in 1990 by its current owner from Classic Motorsports in Santa Rosa, California. At the time of purchase, it sported a black paint finish and interior. For 25 years, it was enjoyed as a cherished classic car. However, from 2015 to 2017, the owner embarked on a comprehensive, no-expense-spared “nut and bolt” restoration to bring the car back to its original glory and beyond. This meticulous restoration was entrusted to a team of renowned Michigan-based Porsche 356 specialists. Larry Smith’s Autometric handled the bodywork and paint. Vic Skirmants, a former SCCA 356 champion, expertly rebuilt the mechanical components, including the replacement engine and gearbox that were in the car at the time of the consignor’s purchase. Hof Designs meticulously restored the interior, and Neil Goldberg’s Neil’s 356 Restoration, along with Gilson Motorsports and Jeff Jones Automotive Techniques, managed the final assembly.
The restoration process also incorporated some tasteful and performance-enhancing upgrades. Desirable magnesium wheels were fitted, along with modern LED lighting for improved visibility. A straight pipe exhaust system was installed to enhance the auditory experience, and an electronic kill switch added a layer of security. Accompanying the car are valuable original and restoration-related items, including a top cover, side windows, a tool roll, and detailed restoration invoices. Furthermore, Porsche Production Specifications documentation and a copy of the Kardex provide complete historical context and authenticity.
