Powerstroke F150: Owner’s Honest Review – Power and Maintenance Realities

The Powerstroke F150, in my experience, is a remarkable truck when everything is running smoothly. As a Lariat model owner, I appreciate the high-quality interior and its genuine truck capabilities. The diesel engine’s power is undeniable, especially when tackling challenging terrains. I even opted for some weight reduction modifications, which significantly enhanced its performance, though others might have different opinions on such modifications.

However, potential owners should be aware of certain aspects. Firstly, parts can be expensive and sometimes difficult to source. It’s worth noting that this engine shares components with Jaguar and Land Rover, which is reflected in some part markings. Furthermore, the engine requires a specific type of oil, and budget-friendly maintenance isn’t really an option. If you prefer low-maintenance vehicles, this might not be the ideal choice.

A recent example highlighted this issue. My block heater malfunctioned, necessitating replacement of both the element and cord, according to the dealership. Upon arriving for my scheduled appointment, only one of the required parts was available. This parts availability issue can be frustrating.

Perhaps undertaking repairs myself could mitigate some of these concerns. If you possess the facilities and expertise for tasks like cab removal, maintaining this truck might become more manageable. Having a background primarily in commercial diesel mechanics (dealing with larger trucks and tractors), these smaller truck diesels, even including heavy-duty models like the F-250 and F-350, can present unique frustrations compared to the larger International, Sterling, and Mack engines I’m accustomed to.
