New spy shots have surfaced, offering a clearer glimpse of what is believed to be the first model from Nio’s sub-brand, Alps. These images suggest that the vehicle is nearing production readiness and is poised to challenge the dominance of the Tesla Model Y in the electric SUV market.
Automotive media outlet Xchuxing, and specifically its CEO He Lei, shared these revealing spy shots, reportedly captured in Heihe, Heilongjiang province, during testing. These high-definition images mark a significant step forward, providing the clearest look yet at the Alps model, especially when compared to previously seen blurry spy shots.
Perhaps the most attention-grabbing detail from these spy shots is a slogan visible on the rear window of the camouflage-wrapped vehicle. The message boldly proclaims its ambition, stating it is “better than Tesla’s Model Y.” This direct comparison signals Alps’ intent to directly compete with and outperform Tesla’s popular SUV. He Lei from Xchuxing highlighted this slogan, interpreting it as a clear declaration of the Alps model aiming to set a new benchmark against the Tesla Model Y. Industry observers speculate that the Alps model could potentially be larger than the Model Y, positioning it as a mid-size to mid-to-large-size SUV.
Nio’s founder, William Li, has previously hinted at the arrival of the Alps model as a compelling alternative to the Tesla Model Y. In a public communication in Ningbo, Zhejiang, Li advised potential Model Y buyers to “wait a while” for the Alps offering. He emphasized that the Alps model would not only be more affordable but also boast features like battery swapping, faster charging capabilities, and a larger screen, presenting a strong value proposition to consumers.
The latest spy shots further reveal a coupe SUV design for the Alps model. While coupe SUVs sometimes face questions regarding sales volume, He Lei offers an insightful perspective by drawing a parallel to the initial reactions to the Tesla Model Y’s design in 2019. He reminds us that the Model Y was initially met with criticism for its aesthetics, yet it went on to become a sales phenomenon, achieving monthly sales figures of 40,000 to 50,000 units. This comparison suggests that Alps might be prioritizing aerodynamic efficiency and interior space optimization, core elements of EV design, similar to Tesla’s approach with the Model Y. He Lei suggests that for companies with focused model lineups, a coupe SUV design can effectively balance these crucial factors. Furthermore, the lively design of the rear window decal hints at a younger, more energetic brand identity for Alps compared to the main Nio brand, potentially attracting a different segment of EV buyers.
According to reports, the Alps’ first model, internally codenamed DOM, is anticipated to launch in October of this year. It will be built on Nio’s advanced NT 3.0 technology platform and feature a new generation electric motor developed in-house by Nio, focusing on optimizing both size and cost efficiency. Pilot production reportedly commenced in October of last year, with ongoing optimization in progress. William Li has indicated that Nio is closely monitoring market dynamics and price competition before finalizing launch strategies. Previous statements from Li suggest the Alps model will be positioned as a direct competitor to the Model Y, offering a more accessible price point within the RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000 range.
The Tesla Model Y currently dominates the Chinese market, with its entry-level model priced at RMB 258,900. In 2023, Model Y sales in China reached an impressive 456,394 units, representing a significant portion of Tesla’s overall sales in the country. This strong market performance underscores the Model Y’s position as a benchmark and the scale of the challenge Alps is undertaking. With its competitive pricing, advanced features, and now, increasingly clear spy shots revealing its design, the Nio Alps model is shaping up to be a significant contender in the EV SUV arena, promising an exciting rivalry with the Tesla Model Y.
